A MESSAGE FROM HEAD OF YEAR 12

It’s been another busy week for Year 12 students as summer finally makes an appearance. We continue to hear from the candidates for Twickenham in our series of hustings. This week Johnathon Hulley from the Conservative Party spoke to the students and received questions in an assembly. This series of talks will culminate in a mock election and we hope the students have become more politically aware and engaged despite just missing out on being able to vote this year. A group of young social activists volunteered to take part in a project about Caring for the River Crane. We heard from the organisation ‘Let’s Go Out and Learn’ on how we can best preserve our waterways. Students walked to the River Crane and learned how very small actions can make a big difference. They became aware of how pouring fats down the sink and washing your car lead to rivers becoming polluted. The group pledged to make small changes and committed to further projects. Baroness Vere of Norbiton, visited this week and gave a talk to our students. She is currently a Treasury Minister and a Conservative member of the House of Lords. She was elevated to the Lords in 2016 having run the Conservative campaign for Remain during the EU Referendum. Before her current stint in the Treasury, she was a Transport Minister for over four years, and had responsibility in that time for aviation, roads, buses, cycling and walking, light rail and maritime. She started her career in investment banking following a degree in Biochemical Engineering at UCL. She also has a MBA from the Kellogg School at Northwestern University. Before entering politics, she worked in education, mental health and recruitment. Students asked thoughtful and insightful questions on her role and the upcoming election. This week our Economics students were fortunate to visit the Bank of England and our Art and Photography students went to ‘Step Up Education at Olympia and the Victoria and Albert Museum. These trips are so enriching as students can see their subjects come alive in the real world and they really take learning out of the textbook. It’s great to see students make the most of all the fabulous opportunities that are provided for them. This week also saw the first inter-form tug of war competitions. Students approached the task with a positive and fun mindset and it was great to see the tutors becoming very competitive too! 12AMZ didn’t lose one match and are straight through to the final!

BOOK OF THE MONTH

Birnam Wood by Eleanor Catton

Some will recognise this title as a place in Macbeth, part of one of the witches’ deceiving prophecies to Macbeth. Fittingly then, this story, set in modern-day New Zealand, is all about the false promises of big business and the climate crisis. Following a group of ‘eco-warriors’ and their dealings with a deceitful billionaire over some precious land, it develops characters and relationships in a compelling way, building to a thriller-like conclusion. It’s unlike anything I’ve read recently; I’d really recommend it.
