A plumber from Leixlip, Co Kildare has run in the Dublin Marathon to raise funds for the Irish Kidney Association after his wife received a life-saving kidney trans- plant. Stephen Rubotham ran in his first-ever marathon on October 26 to honour his wife of one year Niamh McCabe, who received a kidney from her best friend Lindsay Daly. Niamh went into end-stage kidney failure in 2024 caused by polycystic kidney disease, a hereditary condition which has affected several members of her extended family. Stephen was the first to be tested to donate a kidney to Niamh but was not a match while, after initial complications, Lindsay was able to successfully donate a kidney. The story of their friendship first captured hearts when Niamh and Lindsay were winners of coveted audience tickets to the RTÉ Late Late Toy Show special in December 2024. “The Irish Kidney Association has helped our family through some very tough years,” said Stephen. “This marathon is my way of giving back and raising awareness about kidney disease and organ donation.” To support Stephen Rubotham’s Dublin Marathon fundraiser for the Irish Kidney Association, visit www.eventmaster.ie/fundraising/pages/ SR61207287 KILDARE PLUMBER RUNS MARATHON AFTER WIFE’S LIFE- SAVING TRANSPLANT

A SLEEKER BODY AND CLEARLY MARKED DIRECTION-OF-FLOW ARROWS HELP INSTALLERS GET ORIENTATION RIGHT FIRST TIME, ESPECIALLY IN TIGHT SPACES AND HORIZONTAL SETUPS… Wavin’s new HepvO waterless trap offers seamless installation
Leading plumbing and drainage solutions provider Wavin has launched a new version of its popular HepvO waterless trap. The updated design retains its industry- leading sanitary seal while delivering an even easier, more intuitive installation. A sleeker body and clearly marked direction-of-flow arrows help installers get orientation right first time, especially
in tight spaces and horizontal setups. As the original,
world-first waterless trap, HepvO offers a hygienic, practical alternative to traditional U-bend traps, which can lose their water seal by evaporation, siphonage, leakage or movement. HepvO’s self-sealing elastomeric membrane

performs the same function, without the drawbacks, so waste matter is less likely to build up and cause smells or blockages. It has been rigorously tested and is resistant to common household chemicals. HepvO also admits air to the drainage system under negative pressure and then reseals, so it operates silently and avoids the ‘gurgling’ often associated with siphonage and a breached water seal. BRANCH PIPE VENTILATION FOR COMMERCIAL PROJECTS HepvO can also act as an air-admittance device on branch lines. In many scenarios, this removes the need for a separate 50mm AAV, simplifying design and saving space and time. PEACE OF MIND The improved HepvO now comes with a 15-year guarantee, making it a dependable, long-life choice for installers.
Wavin has also made the conscious decision to move away from single-use
• Branch ventilation without separate AAVs; straighter runs and fewer fittings. Extend 32mm branches up to 3m; reduced testing on completion. • Silent operation; unaffected by siphonage. • Fewer blockages; resistant to common cleaners and detergents. • Backed by a 15-year guarantee. INDUSTRY SUPPORT Declan Conlon, Wavin Sales Director, said, “The updated HepvO offers a sleek, modern look and comes with a 15-year guarantee, making it a trusted choice for installers. With over 30 years of proven performance, it’s a product you can have confidence in, and which delivers such versatility across a range of applications, both domestic and commercial.”
plastic packaging to a more sustainable cardboard solution, part of a company- wide effort to minimise its impact on the environment.
MULTIPLE USES HepvO’s compact in-line design
fits horizontally or vertically, suiting everything from baths and showers to kitchen sinks, ideal where cupboard or service space is at a premium and for properties left vacant for periods. The range includes 32mm and 40mm valves, running and knuckle adaptors, plus a 32mm tundish kit for unvented hot water systems. Key benefits for installers • Faster, cleaner installs with direction- of-flow arrows; compact in-line form.

THE DUBLIN AND LOUTH-BASED CONTRACTOR HAS COMPLETED AN INNOVATIVE, INTEGRATED DISTRICT HEATING SYSTEM OFFERING IMPROVED ENERGY RESILIENCE, OPERATIONAL FLEXIBILITY AND REDUCED CARBON EMISSIONS… M&P MECHANICAL DELIVERS STANDOUT RESIDENTIAL ENERGY INFRASTRUCTURE
Demonstrating its expertise in delivering high-performance, large-scale residential mechanical installations, M&P Mechanical has completed a €12m mechanical services package for the Claremont residential development on Howth Road, Dublin 13. The development comprises 512 apartments in four blocks, along with additional facilities including a gym, crèche, retail unit, restaurant, café and anchor unit. M&P Mechanical’s scope of works included the supply, installation and commissioning of all mechanical services across the entire site including residential and commercial zones. Construction commenced in May 2023, with the development delivered in two distinct phases to facilitate efficient delivery and services integration. Block A was completed in February 2025, and Blocks B, C and D in June 2025,
with each phase strategically sequenced to support timely commissioning, streamlined mechanical and electrical integration and coordinated handover in line with the overall programme and stakeholder requirements. A major feature of the project was the design and installation of a district heating system, anchored by a centralised energy centre. The heating system features 18 Samsung air-to-water heat pumps as the primary renewable heat source, supported by micro combined heat and power (Micro-CHP) unit and gas boilers for supplemental heating. Each apartment is equipped with Herz Dublin heat interface units (HIUs) to manage individual heating demands, while ventilation is handled by Zehnder ComfoAir 155 WMe heat recovery units. The HIUs deliver space heating via radiator systems with thermostatic

controls, and instantaneous domestic hot water through plate heat exchangers. Smart variable speed water booster sets were installed with advanced control features such as automatic lead pump rotation, fault logging and soft pressure build-up to prevent water hammer. Mechanical ventilation with heat recovery (MVHR) systems supply fresh air and extract stale air from wet rooms, contributing to high thermal comfort, excellent indoor air quality and minimal energy waste at apartment level. The units include user-friendly commissioning tools, humidity-based control logic and tool-free maintenance access. The Micro-CHP unit is ErP A+++ rated, delivering a total efficiency of over 104%, with a minimum electrical efficiency of 28.4% and thermal efficiency of 75.5%. Multiple air-to-water heat pumps, rated ErP A++, achieves a seasonal coefficient of performance of 3.5 at 55°C, as tested to EN16147. MVHR systems recover up to 90% of heat from exhaust air, significantly reducing heating demand. Energy metering systems are compliant with EN1434 Class 2 for accurate monitoring, and condensing gas boilers operate at 91.4% efficiency with low NOx emissions under 48 mg/kWh. The entire system is monitored and controlled via a McCools building
management system (BMS) to ensure optimal efficiency and comfort across the development. Domestic water and heating services are carefully zoned, balanced and metered, with digital monitoring capabilities linked back to the BMS for performance tracking and maintenance. Additional systems delivered across the development included acoustic soils and waste systems, cold and boosted cold water services, mains water, sanitary fittings and a complete gas distribution network from external mains to plantroom. Notable safety features include jet fans installed in the basement level to circulate air, which ramp up with two extract fans to remove smoke in the event of a fire. M&P Mechanical carried out full testing and commissioning of all systems, including pressure testing, performance verification and seasonal commissioning over two years post- handover. Comprehensive operation and maintenance manuals, as-installed drawings and client training were provided to ensure smooth facility operation. M&P Mechanical worked closely with Walls Construction, Irish Water, Gas Networks Ireland and Marlet Property Group throughout the project to ensure
alignment on design, implementation and performance goals. Coordination meetings, BIM-based modelling using AutoCAD drawings and co-developed builders’ works drawings ensured efficient integration with other disciplines on site. Darren O’Neill, Project Manager, says, “This collaborative approach fostered a strong partnership, enabling the successful delivery of an efficient, reliable heating solution tailored to the needs of the residents and stakeholders. “Claremont Howth represents a forward- thinking, well-integrated district heating solution that combines sustainability, technology, and scale - making it a standout example in modern residential energy infrastructure. “The project demonstrates M&P Mechanical’s expertise in delivering high-performance, large-scale residential
mechanical installations that meet both technical and environmental benchmarks.”

PROVIDING TESTING AND CERTIFICATION, ENSURING COMPLIANCE, AND PREFABRICATION TO REDUCE WASTAGE AND INSTALLATION TIME, KWS LTD SUPPLIED MULTIPLE PRODUCTS TO THE PROJECT… TAILORED SITE SOLUTIONS
KWS Ltd provided a wide range of products for the project, including prefabricated brackets, pipe clamps, fixings for rooftop supports, multilayer pipe and fittings. Implementing bespoke site solutions and early engagement allowed for an efficient and compliant build. KWS Ltd used prefabrication to reduce wastage and installation time, supplying multiple products to the project. David Shanahan, Business Development Manager, says, “Early engagement avoided delays further down the line. “KWS supplied prefabricated brackets, which offered numerous advantages on site including a more efficient use of labour, allowing M&P Mechanical to concentrate on installing the brackets directly at source. “Easier to transport, the brackets were delivered directly to where required on a pallet, reducing wastage on site as
well as installation time.” Efficient logistics was another feature of the project, with KWS using its own transport fleet for prebooked just-in- time deliveries. Impressed with KWS’ efficient supply of compliant products, M&P Mechanical has since replicated its products and services on other sites. KWS has evolved into a single-source supplier for mechanical contractors. Working across residential, commercial, data centre and pharmaceutical projects in partnership with Ireland’s largest and busiest mechanical contractors, KWS aims to solve problems before they arise as an integral part of its customers’ process. With its own fleet of delivery vehicles, the business guarantees accurate and timely deliveries. “We are not your average distributor,” says David. “We understand the real pressures on site – tight timelines,
limited storage and the risk of rework. That’s why we go beyond product drops. We deliver problem-solving, site-specific tailored solutions, technical support and a team that understands what site-ready really means.”

CALOR’S £10K COMPETITION WINNER COMPLETES GAS & SOLAR INSTALLATION
A Co Tyrone self-builder has completed an energy-efficient gas and solar installation after winning a Future Renewables and Calor competition last year. Brendan McVeigh secured the £10,000 prize, comprising a Duracell Energy solar PV system with battery storage from Future Renewables, Bosch boiler and Calor gas tank, at the Selfbuild Extend & Renovate Live Ulster show. The solar panels will generate around 4,500kWh per year which, combined with smart battery storage, will cover about three quarters of the family’s electricity usage. “Calor Gas gives us reliable heating
and quick response times, while solar significantly cuts cost and provides renewable energy,” said Brendan. “To have that in a rural home is something to look forward to. “I’d say to anyone considering renewables or mixed energy, don’t be afraid. The technology is proven, and it should be the standard for future homes. “We would have traditionally used oil and a log stove, but now we have a highly insulated and efficient home. We’ve picked the right technologies, and I’m feeling positive going forward.” www.calorgas.ie

Launching the APHCI Apprentice Regional Roadshow
Ronan Blanchfield, Blanchfield Heating.
The Association of Plumbing and Heating Contractors Ireland (APHCI) has officially launched its Apprentice Regional Roadshow with a dynamic and engaging evening hosted by Uppercross Enterprises Ltd (UEL), one of APHCI’s long-standing strategic partners. The gathering brought together a broad cross-section of the sector - including apprentices, contractors, SOLAS, SEAI, Gas Networks Ireland and representatives from Blanchfield Heating and Ken Lawrence Plumbing - to explore how the plumbing, heating and renewable energy industries are evolving in response to Ireland’s low-carbon ambitions. Apprentices shared candid insights into their training journeys, while contractors reflected on the opportunities and challenges shaping the future of the profession. Training and energy partners outlined how technological innovation,
new standards and the nation’s climate targets will define the next generation of skills. The evening also highlighted UEL’s continued commitment to supporting industry development, providing an ideal backdrop for discussion, collaboration and inspiration. The APHCI Apprentice Regional Roadshow now begins its journey across the country, creating new opportunities to connect emerging talent with industry leaders, and to spotlight the pivotal role apprentices will play in Ireland’s energy transition. Roadshow visits in 2026 will include Cork, the west of Ireland and the Midlands. For apprentices, the message was clear: don’t just think about the future, build it. For further information, please contact David Gilroy: E: dgilroy@aphci.ie www.aphci.ie

MANAGING DIRECTOR PETER O’BRIEN OUTLINES HOW THE THRIVING BUSINESS IS AIMING TO BE THE BEST-IN-CLASS, ONE-STOP-SHOP SUPPLIER IN IRELAND, FROM PRODUCT AVAILABILITY, SELECTION AND TRAINING TO TECHNICAL BACKUP… Davies Raheny invests in a trade counter refurbishment
Tell us about your business Davies Ltd was established in Fairview in Dublin in 1933. In 2003, to cater for rapid and renewed expansion in the construction industry, Davies relocated to its present custom-built facility at Harmonstown Road, Raheny. Davies Raheny sits on a four-acre site with over 40,000sq feet of warehousing. We have the following divisions: Civils & Drainage, Residential & Commercial, Plumbing & Heating and Bathrooms & Distribution. We stock a wide range of products covering all those divisions. We have
in-house engineering teams to assist consultants on specification and sizing of residential and commercial products such as heat pumps, chillers, air-handling units, boilers, buffer tanks and heat exchangers. We also offer CPD presentations to consultants and mechanical contractors. In 2018, Davies opened a second branch in Sallynoggin Dublin. This enabled the business to cater for local installers and clients in South Dublin. What motivated your recent investment in a trade counter refurbishment? To modernise our trade counter and
to give our customers a more efficient service. We have completely gutted the old counter and display area and replaced it with new product display stands and a purpose-built trade counter, offering our staff a better working environment and our customers a better service. We have brought the fast-moving stock behind the counter, making it faster for our staff to locate goods, which in turn makes the process more efficient and helps us get our customers back to their jobs more quickly. With more product on display, it enables us to show our customers everything we
“The team in Davies has vast experience across all the divisions. Their knowledge in the industry is second to none.”
