UNSUNG HERO AWARD DAMIEN CUFFE

Our Unsung Hero has had a rough few years himself, experiencing serious health issues which forced him to retire at the age of 41 from his role as a plumber in autumn 2024. Currently awaiting a lung transplant, Damien Cuffe was sitting at home with his wife in September listening to the radio when a call for help was issued on behalf of a family who had lost their home in a fire. Redefining what a modern merchant should be, Chadwicks is accelerating growth across its branch network through strong supplier partnerships, staff development and an unwavering focus on customer service excellence. Chadwicks differentiates itself through capability, training and alignment with manufacturer innovation - building long-term customer trust in the process. Working closely with leading brands to support product launches and upskill colleagues, the group runs regular in-branch demonstrations, factory tours and technical sessions, ensuring early access to new technologies and emerging industry trends. Strengthening this approach, Chadwicks has combined its nationwide merchant footprint with a future- focused learning and development strategy, most notably through the launch of the Chadwicks Plumbing Academy. This flagship initiative is designed to cultivate the next generation of plumbing and heating sales advisor professionals across Ireland. The Academy integrates technical expertise, manufacturer collaboration, commercial understanding and hands-on experience into one structured learning pathway. Twelve core modules guide participants through system theory, product knowledge, and essential sales and business competencies - delivered through classroom instruction, supplier site visits, practical demonstration days and guest workshops.

place, the family of eight in Ballincollig, Cork was in desperate need of help. Despite his own worries, Damien rose to the occasion, offering to project manage the complete building works, coordinate the different trades involved and organise free labour and materials. Thanks to the efforts of this gentleman and the wider construction industry in Cork, the family should be back in their home before the end of the year. “In true fashion, the tradespeople of Cork stepped up and offered help in any way they could with people giving their time and skills free of charge and the suppliers offering help with products,” said Damien. “It really is the best industry in the world. I count myself very lucky to be a plumber - the king of trades.”
