Using waste heat from a neighbouring Amazon data centre to power a campus district heating system, Phoenix Mechanical’s mechanical installation is the first of its kind in Ireland. Setting a new benchmark for innovative, low-carbon building services, the project has reduced CO2 emissions by 1,100 tonnes in the building’s first year of operation. Ventilation to the building was provided with integration of AHUs with rotary wheel heat recovery technology, ensuring maximum energy efficiency by recovering heat from exhaust air to pre-warm incoming fresh air. All heating, hot water and ventilation systems are integrated into a central BMS, allowing efficient control, monitoring and optimisation of building performance.
Respecting the character of a 1970s building, this complex heating and hot water retrofit presented significant technical challenges while targeting major improvements in energy efficiency and running costs. Judges were impressed by the project’s balance of preservation and performance, delivering a modern, high-efficiency system within the constraints of an older structure. Michael Conway HPS removed the outdated boiler, pumps and degraded pipework, replacing them with a zoned, high-efficiency solution comprising a new oil-fired boiler, unvented cylinder, radiators, pumps and upgraded distribution pipework. A full room-by-room plan was developed, and the raised floor void was used to rework and conceal all services, ensuring a clean and unobtrusive finish throughout the property.
