Bonding in McCall A Getaway With Our Team

The summer concluded with us sending our third daughter off to college. It goes a little smoother each time, but it never gets easy. Before she went, we made sure to share as many experiences and create as many memories as possible. College isn’t a goodbye forever, but it does mark a change in the parent-child relationship. That’s not a bad thing; it’s just the opposite, but it does make you feel like you’re on the clock to spend some quality time together. Speaking of quality time, one of the coolest things I did this summer was a two-day retreat with the Trailridge Family Dental team. We went to Camp Ida-Haven in McCall for a chance to hang outside of the office, do some team-building activities, and

get to know each other a little better. It was a true delight and something I hope will become a tradition here at the practice. We work together every day, but it’s rare to spend time with each other outside of the office. We all have busy lives back at home, so I realized it was worth making the concerted effort to bring us all together. We played a number of games where we had to collaborate, communicate, and work together to achieve a result. One involved bringing a rope across a “pond of water.” (I use the quotation marks because the pond was simulated.) It took some creative

W hile the season is winding down, families are looking to go on a few end-of-season adventures, camping trips included. Before you head out into the wilderness with your family, it’s important to be prepared. In fact, “be prepared” is the best piece of advice when it comes to braving the great outdoors. But what does being prepared entail? Here are four key tips. HAVE A FIRST-AID KIT NEARBY. A good rule of thumb is to keep one in your car at all times. You never know when you’ll need it. Kids may get a few bumps and scrapes while out hiking, or you might encounter poisonous plants, such as poison ivy or poison oak. Having quick access to cold water, soap, antiseptics (hydrogen peroxide or rubbing alcohol), and calamine lotion or hydrocortisone cream can keep infections at bay. TEACH FIRE SAFETY. When you build a fire, especially with kids, teach them about fire safety. This includes building the fire itself. Pick a spot away from brush and overhanging branches and create a pit surrounded by rocks. Before lighting a fire, have a bucket of water Gone Camping 4 THINGS TO KEEP IN MIND ON YOUR NEXT FAMILY CAMPING TRIP

and a shovel nearby so you can quickly extinguish it when ready. Finally, remember to only build a fire as big as you need. A larger fire can be difficult to manage and keep under control. KEEP AN EYE ON THE SKY. Weather can change at a moment’s notice, and sometimes, it doesn’t give notice at all. Keep a close eye on the sky and monitor the weather on a radio. If a storm appears, seek shelter immediately and stay out of low-lying areas. When you’re in mountainous or hilly terrain, a little rain is all it takes for flash floods to occur. If you’re in a ravine when it starts raining, get out immediately. ALWAYS STICK TOGETHER. It’s a good idea to hike with a buddy and keep a whistle around your neck or in your pack. You never know what you might encounter or when you’ll need help. Hiking with kids is also a great time to teach them to recognize landmarks and be aware of their surroundings. If you have a digital camera or smartphone, show kids how to create a trail of digital breadcrumbs or pictures to help them find their way back to camp.

thinking, including tying our shoes together, but we were able to accomplish the goal. I really believe that the couple days of challenges like these, as well as some great discussions, created an even stronger bond between us all. As a practice, I believe we should be a great place for patients and team members alike. To achieve that, we’ve been asking questions and defining our culture as a practice and the environment we hope to create. After all, it’s hard to do great work if you’re not happy with your job. To provide the best, most personal care to our patients, we have to function as a team. The old cliche is that a good office treats their patients like family. Well, it’s very hard to do that if you don’t function like one as a staff. Maybe we should start calling these getaways our Trailridge Family Reunions.

Development comes in many forms. Of course, we always want to provide a place where team members can grow in their careers and skill sets. But we also hope they have opportunities to grow as parents, children, friends, community members, and in every other type of relationship they have.

Before I sign off, I’d like to remind everyone that we’ll be holding our annual Stars, Stripes, and Smiles event in October. On that day, we provide free dentistry to active-duty military, veterans, and their family members. It’s one of the most rewarding days on our calendar, and we’re looking forward to it. Stay tuned for more information about this special event.
