JENNIFER LOVE HEWITT, ACTRESS It’s tough to repeat the magic of old hits My daughter is now 10 years old and adores the TV shows and movies I used to act in, though she claims that I wasn’t at all “cool” in them ~ says the star of the TV series 9-1-1, through laughter
fact that she likes my old series and movies means that I’m also, as she puts it, “cool”, but the answer is al- ways no. I suppose I’ll have to wait a bit longer to earn star status in my own home. But I’m satisfied with my career and chosen profession. I will this year celebrate my 45 th birthday and 35 years in acting, which is very exciting. I’m happy that I’m still do- ing what I love. Do you remember the day when you received the part in the series 9-1-1? - I remember the phone ring- ing at a moment when I was clean- ing some kids mess from the floor, like any new mother, and by the very next moment I was in front of the cameras. I felt guilty at first, but I quickly realised that my kids like to visit me on set and that they find it interesting to hang out with the members of the crew and en- joy snacks from the catering service. What is it about acting that still draws you to it? - Many people wish at some point in their lives to be someone else and to live some different desti- ny in any other place on the planet. For a full 35 years, I’ve had the op- portunity to fulfil that desire every day through acting, and that’s what brings me back and entices me to this profession time and again. I consider it a great blessing and a privilege.
ONE OF THE MOST POP- ULAR AMERICAN TV SERIES, the exciting action procedural 9-1- 1, created by six-time Emmy winning producer Ryan Murphy and four- time Emmy nominated director and screenwriter Tim Minear, is return- ing to the small screen for a spectac- ular seventh season. A star-studded cast, led by Peter Krause and Oscar winner Angela Bassett, brings new adventures of the emergency ser- vice team. Speaking in this exclusive inter- view for Elevate, one of the stars of the show, actress Jennifer Love He- witt, reveals what awaits us in the new episodes and how this series changed her career during a period when motherhood had taken prec- edence in her everyday life. What drew you to the series 9-1-1 and how does it differ from similar TV dramas? - It seems to me that the main reason is that you have the feeling when watching it that all the crazy situations unfolding on the screen are real. During this season we have a large tourist cruise ship that’s hi- jacked by terrorists and immediate- ly gets hit by a major ocean storm. We’ve also had earthquakes, tsuna- mis, supercell storms, and even a fighter jet that ends up in a cou- ple's living room while they argue over nothing. Despite this all seem- ing excessively bombastic, the fact is that each episode is based on re- al-life events to some extent. You’ve been known to tele- vision audiences since the early 1990s. Your role in 9-1-1 serves to prove that
it’s never too late for a new start... - When you’ve been in front of the cameras for a long time, your greatest wish is to continue work- ing for at least as many years. You also hope that people will remem- ber what you shot at the beginning of your career; that they recall your older roles. My daughter is now 10 years old, and whenever she watches some of the older series and movies in which I acted she’s always delight- ed with the topics we addressed. I think the viewing public still watch- es those old productions with lots of nostalgia. Everything is much more grandiose and visually advanced to- day, but it is tough to repeat the mag- ic of those former big hits. Does that mean you’re a big star in your own home? - Unfortunately not [laughs]. I often ask my daughter in jest if the
