ESSENTIAL WINTER SAFETY MEASURES FOR EVERYONE FOLLOW THESE TIPS TO PREVENT SEASONAL SLIP-AND-FALL ACCIDENTS

When you have older parents and relatives like me, I’m sure you also worry about them slipping and falling when you aren’t there. Recently, my mom signed up for a research study for aging adults, and a specialist came to her home and assessed the fall risks and provide tips to avoid falls. With winter being its iciest during January, our older loved ones and even we ourselves must know how to properly prevent a slip-and-all accident that can lead to serious injuries. While winter increases the risk for older adults, anyone can experience a nasty fall! I’ve even had a tumble down my own driveway. My husband and I have a long driveway, and once before we headed out, I told him I’d need a flashlight since it gets so dark. Of course, he insisted I didn’t , and I’m sure you can guess what happened. I didn’t see where the slippery driveway met the grass, and I fell straight on my knees. You bet he got an earful after that! Everyone can take extra steps to keep themselves safe this winter, and sharing information with your loved ones can stop a fall leading to the emergency room. First, your shoes are one of the most crucial ways to prevent falls! You need good shoes with traction to keep you steady on your icy doorstep or a slick parking lot. Keep the dress shoes home, and lace up those boots and winter-proof sneakers! If you take any medications that might make you dizzy or unbalanced, please be extra careful, check your weather forecast, and stick with footwear with a strong grip. Winter weather conditions can be especially hazardous during the night. You might miss an extra icy patch without proper lighting, so try adding motion sensor lighting outside your home and even inside to keep your pathway clear. I have motion-sensor lights in my hallways to ensure no one falls in the middle of the night! Clearly, this is something I need to do for my driveway.

Something we often don’t hear about but can save us from a nasty fall is consistent exercise . While it might sound strange, working out improves your strength, balance, and coordination, making you less of a fall risk. The more you exercise, the more likely you’ll be able to prevent a fall quickly. Additionally, it doesn’t hurt to learn the correct way to fall in case you do! While most of us usually instinctively put our hands in front of us to catch ourselves, this can lead to a severe wrist, arm, or shoulder injury. You must also avoid falling directly on your back or head. Do whatever you can to direct your fall to land on your bottom and roll to your side. Of course, when in doubt, stay home! I repeatedly remind my family this when the weather gets freezing cold. As I watch my parents get older, I want to do my best to help them stay safe, especially when we’re all under risky weather conditions. If you find yourself injured from a fall, call us. Even if it’s not a legal case, our team can help you find an excellent physical therapist or specialist to get you back on your feet. Stay safe!

WHAT DID MAYANS CONSIDER TO BE ‘MODEL’ LOOKS?

A smile is a universal expression of happiness, which was also true in Mayan culture. However, the difference came with what you saw when they smiled, as Mayans enjoyed shaping and filing their teeth to sharp points. They then drilled holes through the center of their teeth to insert gems. Tattoos were also considered stylish among Mayans, but they weren’t like modern tattoos. The big difference in their skin designs was that they were achieved by actually carving into the skin to create 3D wounds. Hair accessories were big during Mayan times — really big. It wasn’t unusual for women to construct large, elaborate headdresses adorned with precious metals and gems and shaped to honor local animals. Another Mayan beauty standard relates to one of their prized crops: corn. It is said that Mayans correlated beauty with face and head structures that were long and narrow, much like an ear of

corn. To accomplish that, Mayan families bound the heads of their infant children between two boards while the skull was growing to achieve an extended cranial shape that would last the child’s whole life. Eyes are a universal source of beauty, but the Mayans thought the ultimate set of beautiful eyes were crossed eyes. To create crossed eyes, they put a band around the heads of children with a bead suspended right in front of their eyes. They continued this until the children were permanently cross-eyed. Noses were also a central sign of beauty among Mayans, and for them, the bigger the better. A large, hooked nose symbolized their bird-like gods and was so important to them that they added specially designed artificial nose bridges that were often multicolored and decorated with gems. Beauty is influenced by cultural values, and the Mayans invested a lot of time, energy, and creativity to achieve their vision of beauty, even if that vastly differs from today’s standards.

Beauty and fashion trends come and go throughout the years, with some — such as matte makeup, fringe, and ripped jeans — even making comebacks in recent years. The ancient Mayans also sought to be beautiful, but their practices were

different compared to modern standards, as they were willing to completely change their bodies to conform to their beauty standards.

WHAT IS THE ULTIMATE SOUP FOR NATIONAL SOUP MONTH? HEARTY SOUPS AND HOT TAKES

AN UNDENIABLE WINNER … What kind of team would we be if not a single one of us voted for tomato basil soup? Jessica Maza, our legal assistant, had to choose not only tomato basil soup but the exact one served at Schlotzsky’s Deli. As for our litigation paralegal, Travis Dalhoff, he had quite a bit to say about the renowned soup! Travis elaborated that tomato basil soup wins in nearly every category, including flavor combination, versatility, comfort factor, nutritional value, ease of preparation, accompaniments (aka grilled cheese sandwiches), and culinary tradition. I wasn’t lying when I said he had a lot of feelings about this! If you ever want a recipe for one of our favorite soups, you can always give us a call, and we’ll send it your way! Lastly, we want to know your favorite soup. Did we not mention it? Send us an email of your favorite soup so we can have our weeknight dinners planned and ready to go!

It’s the season for soup! January is National Soup Month, and it’s the perfect time to serve up a warm bowl of rich and hearty broth. With how busy I am, I appreciate the simplicity of soups and how easy they are to whip up and still turn out delicious. It’s also a fun and easy way to teach the kids how to cook for themselves. Remember the recipe club I started with my family? Well, enchilada soup was the first recipe we tried because I knew it was as straightforward as it gets! The question is, what soup is the ultimate soup? This might be a silly question for most, but we take our soup seriously. That’s why I decided to ask the entire Emery Law Office team for their steaming hot takes. ITALIAN CLASSICS AND SAVORY SQUASH While our receptionist, Dianne Larson, was a hands-down minestrone soup supporter, I had to counter her Italian staple with my favorite soup, Italian vegetable soup! Of course, our administrative professional, Tessa Horan, had to mention Panera’s iconic butternut squash soup, which she can’t get enough of. I decided to pull out a crowd-pleaser to beat the rest: lobster bisque! If I don’t have to cook it myself, lobster bisque is definitely my ultimate favorite soup.

BARKS FROM BELLA

HAVE A LAUGH!

WELCOME FRANKIE THE MINI DACHSHUND TO THE FAMILY! I have breaking news and am ready to bark from the rooftops: I’m officially an aunt! My human brother John just brought home a miniature dachshund named Frankie, and it was my job to help her navigate the holiday chaos for her first time!

The holidays can be a lot for a mini-wiener dog like Frankie! So, both Sadie and I showed her the ropes.

Sadie taught Frankie to watch for unattended plates (she ate a piece of apple pie that was left near the firepit). I showed Frankie the importance of exercising after the meal by sharing my toy squeaky balls and teaching her how to play fetch! Frankie discovered that the floor isn’t the only place to find food scraps — sometimes, the humans who have beards get morsels stuck on the way to the floor. And lastly, when most of the company has left, taking a nap is necessary!

At first, I was confused about how we could be related if she’s so small. Frankie is so tiny that she has to wear a winter coat! While we may not look too similar, we’re still family. I’ve even learned a few facts about dachshunds: Did you know that the standard dachshund was bred to hunt badgers? Dachshund in German means “badger dog,” and their short legs and long bodies allowed them to track scents close to the ground and crawl into burrows to find badgers.

Also, the wiener dog came before the hot dog! The original name for the hot dog was thought to be the “dachshund sausage,” but it has been shortened to hot dog over time.

A dachshund was also the first official mascot for the 1972 Munich Olympic Games. He was a colorful wiener dog named Waldi! In Southern California, there is an annual dachshund race! The Wienerschnitzel Wiener Nationals have been going on since 1995, and while the race isn’t the most serious of events (dachshunds were never bred to race), it is still a lot of fun to watch. I’m so excited to be an aunt and show Frankie all the ropes in the coming years! I got a new best friend to play with, and I’ll share even more news about Frankie in 2024. Happy New Year from Frankie and me!

MEET KUPATA, GEORGIA'S STREET-ROAMING PUP HERO 4

KUPATA'S ROAD TO FAME THE STRAY DOG WHO CAPTURED THE WORLD'S HEART

We often think dogs live the good life, as they seem to do nothing but play, eat, and sleep. Yet, some dogs are busy at work, some without being asked to do so! Take Kupata, the stray dog in Georgia, for example. This street-roaming pup takes it upon himself to guard a crosswalk all day, every day. In the town of Batumi, this stray stays by a single crosswalk and forces traffic to stop to allow pedestrians to cross the street. He’s especially protective of children! If Kupata sees a car isn’t slowing down, he’ll bark at the driver as they drive away and run to protect the person crossing the

street. One local even shared that Kupata will cross the road with children and stay at the park to protect the youngsters. Kupata, which in English means “sausage,” has become a staple in the community due to his hard work, and locals all pitch in to care for and feed the stray dog. His consistently round belly shows just how loved he is. You’ll even see a massive painting of the beloved animal on a nearby building. Now, after tireless days of guarding his street, Kupata has his own doghouse provided by the city with an accompanying star on the road with

his name on it. Kupata’s dedication made him go viral on social media, and now travelers from all over the world come to see Kupata. Don’t distract him, though. He’s busy at work! Sadly, even though Kupata remains cherished by his community, thousands of stray dogs in the country need shelter, food, and companionship. According to activists, around 500,000 stray dogs and cats roam the streets of Georgia. While stray animals may get a bad reputation for being dangerous or unfriendly, Kupata proves that even these furry friends deserve love and recognition.
