BARKS FROM BELLA
HAVE A LAUGH!
WELCOME FRANKIE THE MINI DACHSHUND TO THE FAMILY! I have breaking news and am ready to bark from the rooftops: I’m officially an aunt! My human brother John just brought home a miniature dachshund named Frankie, and it was my job to help her navigate the holiday chaos for her first time!
The holidays can be a lot for a mini-wiener dog like Frankie! So, both Sadie and I showed her the ropes.
Sadie taught Frankie to watch for unattended plates (she ate a piece of apple pie that was left near the firepit). I showed Frankie the importance of exercising after the meal by sharing my toy squeaky balls and teaching her how to play fetch! Frankie discovered that the floor isn’t the only place to find food scraps — sometimes, the humans who have beards get morsels stuck on the way to the floor. And lastly, when most of the company has left, taking a nap is necessary!
At first, I was confused about how we could be related if she’s so small. Frankie is so tiny that she has to wear a winter coat! While we may not look too similar, we’re still family. I’ve even learned a few facts about dachshunds: Did you know that the standard dachshund was bred to hunt badgers? Dachshund in German means “badger dog,” and their short legs and long bodies allowed them to track scents close to the ground and crawl into burrows to find badgers.
Also, the wiener dog came before the hot dog! The original name for the hot dog was thought to be the “dachshund sausage,” but it has been shortened to hot dog over time.
A dachshund was also the first official mascot for the 1972 Munich Olympic Games. He was a colorful wiener dog named Waldi! In Southern California, there is an annual dachshund race! The Wienerschnitzel Wiener Nationals have been going on since 1995, and while the race isn’t the most serious of events (dachshunds were never bred to race), it is still a lot of fun to watch. I’m so excited to be an aunt and show Frankie all the ropes in the coming years! I got a new best friend to play with, and I’ll share even more news about Frankie in 2024. Happy New Year from Frankie and me!
