Professor Rail has produced an old copy of th e Christian W orkers Maga zine in which Dr. Torrey is reported as having said a t a conference a t the Moody Bible In stitu te, “There is only one Emperor th a t will bring peace and th a t is not K aiser Wilhelm bu t Kaiser Jesus.” This proves, we are told, th a t WE are the bouncing big liars and not the modernist editors of th e Methodist papers. But does , it? Even though Dr. Torrey once in his life m ight have said such a thing, does th a t show th a t th is is a habit of his? Certainly Professor Rail never heard Dr. Torrey use such an expression, nor did any of -the edi tors who hurl the charge. N either can we find any one who ever heard him use th e words. F u rth erm o re, Dr. Torrey has taken pains to show th a t th e one quotation which they have found for th e ir support was not tak en from a\ stenographically reported sermon but from a general repo rt of a conference. The article referred to is interspersed w ith sho rt quotations from various speakers and these were tak en down in longhand. Instead of th is showing, as th e edi to rs have tried to prove, th a t Dr. Torrey’s views call for a Christianity of violence and bloodshed, the article shows the very opposite. None of these papers have given the whole quota tion. There is manifestly bu t one re a son. It would have ruined th e ir arg u ment against prem illennialism and would not have lent itself to proving th a t Dr. Torrey favors th e methods of th e late Kaiser. The article in question quoted Dr. Torrey first as saying, “ I believe th e re is nothing more hellish or damnable th an war, but I know my Bible too well to believe we have had our last w ar.” This statem en t is deliberately om itted by Professor Rail and the other editors. Dr. Torrey is then repo rted to have
said, “ I am an optim ist because I believe in what th e Book says about the re tu rn of the Lord Jesus. * * * W hat we need is God to come down to ta k e control of business and politics, and He is coming down. * * * W hat we need is an emperor b u t th ere is only one Emperor th a t will bring peace, and th a t is not K aiser W ilhelm, it is K aiser Jesu s.” (Dr. Torrey believes th a t the last phrase is not a correct quotation of what he said.) If th e anti-B ible In stitu ters can gain anything to th e ir cause by advertising th e fact th a t Dr. Torrey was once re ported as saying “K aiser Jesu s” we have no objection. It is th e ir sta te m ent th a t Dr. .Torrey is in th e habit of using these words th a t we branded as false, and we still stick to it. The whole propaganda is so clearly p reju diced as to be ridiculous. It is th e old story of throw ing dust to becloud the fact th a t these men have gone back on th e Word of God. — K. L.
