T HE K I N G ' S B U S I N E S S

The Seed Takes Root Mr., s ---------- was a follower of Ju d a ism for years. He rigidly adhered to th e observance of the great Jewish holi days, customs and ceremonies, but found no certain ease for h ea rt or con science in observing outw ard forms and ceremonies. G radually his confidence in Judaism was shaken and he lapsed into indifference regarding religious things. One day some of th e workers of th e Jewish D epartm ent called on this family and while one-of them w ent up stairs over the store to speak w ith the wife, th e other stepped into th e shoe m ak er’s shop to speak w ith th e hus band. He listened attentively, but seemed quite indifferent to spiritual things. On the occasion of la ter visits and during subsequent conversations, a real in terest in ’Christianity was aw ak ened. He was persuaded to attend our Hebrew Christian meetings, where in addition to a Bible message on very vital Jewish subjects, He had an op portunity to hear the testimonies of converted Jews. One day in one of the Jewish meetings, though no one knew ju st how or when he had accepted Christ as his Messiah, he stood up and, gave testimony to the fact th a t he had found in Jesus Christ his own Jewish Messiah. Since th a t tim e his wife and several of the members of his large family have also professed conversion.

pletes the ranks of Judaism ; and last, hu t not least, conversion to Christianity accounts for th e loss of others. At th e tim e when th is article is being w ritten the Jewish people are every where preparing for “Yom K ippur” or the Jew ish Day of Atonement, which falls th is year on October 2. Could we h u t look into the m inds and h earts of the ortho dox Jews, we would no doubt find them occupied w ith th e thoughts of judgm ent and justification. Judaism teaches th a t at th is season of the year th e Creator passes sentence upon every individual. If the good deeds of the orthodox Jew outweigh his had ones, he is granted life (?) If his had deeds outweigh his good ones, he is sentenced to death un less, by prayers, fasting and charity on ' the Day of Atonement, he makes atone m ent for his sin. Thousands of Jews will attend the services' in the syna gogues, paying from $2.00 to $8.Op for a ticket. Thousands of Jews, the coun try over, a t th is tim e of th e year especially, will abound in charitable deeds. Thousands will fast all day in the hope th a t the loss of th e ir flesh and blood through fasting may atone for th eir sins. Thousands will beat their breasts, like the publican of old, and cry out to God for /mercy, but “the Lamb of God th a t tak eth away the sin of the world” is still rejected by Israel as a nation and consequently th eir pray ers, th eir fastings and th e ir charitable deeds are all in vain.

The second man was all ready to accept the Gospel and we had the joy of landing a fish. “P aul sowed, Apollos watered, bu t God gave th e increase.” Then we met some GOLD—SILVER—PRECIOUS STONES? Finding him a Christian, we brought to him some Scripture regarding God’s purpose for th is age for those who be come His children through faith in th e finished work of th e Lord Jesus Christ;
