CURRENT RELIGIOUS COMMENT-By the Editors Shailer Matthews, dean of Chicago University.” There isn’t anything so “modern” about Dr. Matthews’ theo logical views, afte r all. Some of the very latest ideas were conceived in Eden.
Well! Well! And so th e Fundam entalists are “making trouble ‘for th e church.” “Well! w ell!” says a correspondent, “T h at rem inds me of the small boy running to his mother w ith th e demand, “Mamma, whip Jimm ie; he bawls every tim e I pinch him .” Something Queer about This! A m inister who has been for some tim e chairman of a comm ittee for examining candidates for the m inistry, made the statem en t recently th a t, “The greatest lack of knowledge of any text book on which candidates had been examined had been in th e ir defective knowledge of th e Scriptures.” I t’s getting to be a very common complaint th a t if you w&nt to know w hat th e Bible teaches, it is useless to ask some of the m inisters of the new school. The New Commandment, I t is being pronounced in many quarters! W hat is it? “Thou sh alt not criticize the critics.” They say we have no rig h t to attack the critics, a t least until we have read first hand all th e ir w ritings and understand fully th e ir viewpoint. Life is too short. Enough to know th a t they deny the in spiration of the Scriptures and the Deity and atonem ent of Christ. Come on in! The W ater’s Fine! An exchange says th a t Mr. B ryan has confessed th a t he had not met such opposition and vilification and w illful m isunderstanding in all his political campaigns as he had received dur.ng the sho rt period he had been dealing w ith the theological problems, from preachers and Christian leaders. It was a revelation to him. Well, if he were of th e world, the world would love its its own. The Antique Dr. Matthews Dr. Shailer Matthews, of Chicago University, spends his summer vaca tion at Monson, Maine. This year the town had him on th e program for its centennial celebration. This is the way th e local newspaper advertised him : “Remember the Monson centennial cele bration Saturday. The g reatest collec tion of antiques ever seen in the coun ty. Your opportunity to h ear Dr.
How to Tickle Some Young People. The Baptist recently printed a list of questions put to members of a B. Y. ,P. U. by its pastor. It is said th a t the questions struck' oil a t once, and it is suggested th a t any pastor who is divorced from his young people, will do well to pu t them up to the young people. Among the questions are the following: “W hat play, show or movie have you attended the past month th a t you are glad to commend, and why? Will plays in the church help or h u rt th e th eater? Will acting, tak ing part in these plays, help or h u rt our church young people? In the parish annex, or social rooms of a modern church build ing, would you have a kitchen? a stage? a bowling alley? pool or billiard tables? a smoking room? game room? gymnas ium and swimming pool? movie equip ment? dancing?” Revolt Against Celibacy A petition bearing the names of a large number of Roman Catholic priests, bishops and cardinals, has gone to the Pope asking for relief from the vows of celibacy. They declare th a t “moral purity, the high aim of the church, must be reached through the free working of human natu re, not by coercion, nor by th e imposition of laws against na tu re .” This m atter has been up several times in centuries past, but the popes have always tu rned it down. It remains to be seen w hat th e present Pope will do. About Time to P reach Salvation No less an au tho rity th an W. A. P inkerton, head of P ink erton ’s National Detective Agency, made a public state m ent recently, th a t “while crime and crim inals still exist and always will un til , human n atu re changes to an extent not to be expected, crime preven tion and its detection is far more diffi cult now th an was the case years ago, because of th e inventions which science has accomplished and which crim inals have tak en advantage of.”
