We Cannot Wait for It to Get Easy LIFE DOES NOT GET EASIER — WE GET STRONGER

Things do not get easier. We just learn to handle hard better. I recently discovered this idea of “handling hard better” after watching a truly inspirational speech by Kara Lawson, the women’s basketball coach at Duke. While speaking to her team, Lawson discussed how we often think that things will get easier once we reach a certain point. We just have to get through this phase, and it will all be smooth sailing, right? Lawson says, “It will never get easier. What happens is you handle hard better.” It might sound harsh, but it is true! The issue is that when we expect things to get easier, and they never do, we consider giving up. Whatever meaningful accomplishments we hope to achieve in life will never be easy. Life is challenging, but we need to push ourselves to handle hard better. Right now, in 2024, I know it’s not easy. Simply living in our current global landscape is demanding. War, inflation, the political challenges in Washington D.C., and plenty of other things make our world hard to handle. But we have overcome these challenges before and can certainly handle them again. We are also facing struggles that are unprecedented, like a pandemic. However, everything happening right now has happened before in one way or another. That is why we need to strive to handle hard better. Of course, it will not be easy, but it is possible.

I’m turning 60 this year, and looking back, I can recall all these seemingly world-ending events that took place. Except, here we are still standing! We all have the strength and the energy not only to handle hard times but also to thrive in them. All that we need is some motivation and hope. I subscribe to the Daily Coach to receive a dose of both to uplift me for the day’s challenges. Another one of my favorite inspirational coaches is former NCAA legendary basketball coach Jimmy Valvano. In his famous ESPY speech in March of 1993, somehow, near death from cancer, he was called on to accept the Arthur Ash Courage Award. As he rose from his seat in Madison Square Garden to accept the award, he inspired millions: “I urge all of you, all of you, to enjoy your life, the precious moments you have to spend each day with some laughter and some thought, to get your emotions going, to be enthusiastic every day. Ralph Waldo Emerson said, “Nothing great can be accomplished without enthusiasm to keep your dreams alive in spite of problems.” He later added “Don’t give up. Don’t ever give up. . . Cancer can take away all my physical abilities. It cannot touch my mind. It cannot touch my heart. And it cannot touch my soul. And those three things are going to carry on forever.” Coach Valvano that day showed us all how to handle hard better.

determination to overcome obstacles, but once you learn how to do that, life will no longer feel like some horrid hurdle. During the 1980 presidential election, the world was looking dismal. There were hostages in Iran, a full-fledged cold war, and a financial crisis. But we handled it! America always handles it, and we will do it again. I hope you can look ahead at 2024, not with dread or anxiety but with determination and hope. It is crucial to embrace the truth that challenges will persist. Rather than expecting things to become easier, we must focus on our ability to “handle hard better.” The world has weathered numerous storms, and despite them, resilience prevails. Reflecting on history and drawing inspiration from mentors like Valvano reinforces the idea that handling difficulty is an acquired skill. As we navigate the new year, let’s cultivate a mindset to confront challenges, not just for momentary survival, but for a meaningful future. – Brian Eagle 317-726-1714 1

You could easily miss a lot happening above our atmosphere if you didn’t stay up late or watch the news beforehand. Once the sun sets tonight, look up at the sky. As long as you’re not in an area with heavy light pollution, you should be able to see brilliant constellations. On some nights, you may even see more than you expected. No, we’re not talking about UFOs or little green men but about naturally occurring phenomena deep in outer space.

Be aware that if the moon shines too brightly, you likely won’t be able to see the meteors. Saturn Looking at other planets can be fascinating but not always possible, especially without a telescope. Thankfully, you won’t need a telescope to see Saturn and its rings on Sept. 8. Once the sun sets, head outside and look to the east. You should see a bright yellow star that’s not usually visible. That’s Saturn! Total Solar Eclipse You won’t have to wait until night to see this rare occurrence. On April 8, the moon will pass perfectly between the Sun and Earth, creating an eclipse. A Chronicle of 6 Decades: 1964–2024

2004–14: Facebook and the iPhone A 23-year-old Mark Zuckerberg created Facebook on Feb. 4, 2004. The company, now Meta, would later become worth nearly $843.6 billion and a dominant social media platform. Then, on Jan. 9, 2007, Steve Jobs revealed the very first iPhone, and since then, 18 models have been created. 2014–24: Reaching Pluto and Beyond Three billion miles from Earth, the first man-made object flew past Pluto on July 14, 2015. The NASA spacecraft New Horizons captured jaw-dropping photographs of the dwarf planet that wowed the world. Of course, there have been many more unbelievable moments in history since 1964, but this just proves there is still so much more to look forward to. The best is yet to come!

As my 60th birthday comes closer, I have been thinking about everything I have experienced in these past six decades. Just as we have handled hard before, we have also experienced plenty of achievements. How about we look at some monumental events that made each decade memorable, dating back to when I was born in 1964? 1964–74: The First Man on the Moon We cannot skip over the first man on the moon! On July 20, 1969, Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin, and Michael Collins became the first crew to ever set foot on the moon. Perhaps not as legendary, but still incredible was the Mets winning the World Series that same year. This would be the only championship for the Mets until 1986. 1974–84: The Internet Personal home computers, or PCs, started entering the market

in the 1970s. Some of the earliest models included Commodore PET and Radio Shack’s TRS-80. However, it was not until Jan. 1, 1983, that the internet was born. 1984–94: The Berlin Wall and Cellphones On Nov. 9, 1989, the Berlin Wall fell. Germany was united after over two decades of division. The event would cause “the greatest street party in the history of the world,” according to one witness. Also known as “The Brick,” the hefty Motorola DynaTAC 8000X would become a popular cellphone (for those who could afford it). 1994–2004: Google and the ISS On Nov. 2, 2000, the International Space Station (ISS) became operational. Since then, more than 273 people from 21 countries have visited the ISS. Meanwhile, Google started its rise to ubiquity after its creation in 1998.
