June/July 2022 Anchorlines

Human Resources Committee Allow me to share some important initiatives we highlighted at our recent semi-annual membership meeting. The apt title of our report at the semi-annual meeting was: “Employees Are Our Greatest Asset.” Short staffing has been a problem for just about every employer in the hospitality industry. MIYC is no exception. We noted the labor shortage in SWFL, the 8.5 % inflation rate, the driving distance challenge for potential hires north of the bridge, the significant increase in our membership and in food/beverage demands, and the fact that we’ve not had to be overly concerned about competitive wages and benefits—until recently. We observed that there were 30 active job postings by our local competitors for jobs we were also seeking to fill. We’ve successfully addressed this challenge by invoking several strategies, such as an employee retention bonus, enhanced benefits package, employee referral bonus and a commuting bonus. And we’ve made some recent quality hires in Chef Jono , Sous Chef Brad , Dockmaster Missy , Line Cook Iseme, Receptionist Brian, Server Joey and Information Systems Analyst Zack. You will also notice the return of Server Layni, who will fill in during May-June. Please give them all a warm welcome at the Club! Come June 1, we will also be paying the promised retention bonuses to those staff who stuck with us and remained committed and loyal during the very busy season just passed. A big THANK YOU to you all! To ensure a more equitable distribution of workload and to maximize member experience and satisfaction, we are applying for some H2B visa workers for the coming season. More on that as we get closer in time. Finally, we all appreciate the patience and respect given to staff by our members this past season. It speaks volumes about the kind of Club we have and how we want to treat our “greatest asset”—our employees. Thank you. Kevin Hennessy Board of Directors Chair, HR Committee
