Making a difference: Outcomes for ARC supported research

ARC scheme information: Linkage Program

The ARC Centres of Excellence scheme supports prestigious foci of expertise through which high-quality researchers collaboratively maintain and develop Australia’s international standing in research areas of national priority. ARC Centres of Excellence facilitate significant collaboration to allow the complementary research resources of universities, publicly funded research organisations, other research bodies, governments and businesses to be concentrated to support outstanding research. The Industrial Transformation Research Hubs scheme encourages collaborative research and development (R&D) projects between universities and organisations outside the Australian higher education sector that will solve challenging industry issues relevant to the Industrial Transformation Priorities. The scheme drives growth, productivity and

competitiveness within key growth sectors; and leverages national and international investment in targeted industry sectors, including from industry and other research end-users. The Industrial Transformation Training Centres scheme fosters opportunities for Higher Degree by Research candidates and postdoctoral fellows to pursue industrial training. The scheme drives growth, productivity and competitiveness within key growth sectors; enhances competitive research collaboration between universities and organisations outside the Australian higher education sector; and strengthens the capabilities of industries and other research end-users in identified Industrial Transformation Priority areas. The Linkage Projects scheme supports the initiation and/or development of long-term strategic research alliances between higher

education organisations and other organisations, including industry and other research end-users, in order to apply advanced knowledge to problems and/or to provide opportunities to obtain national economic, commercial, social or cultural benefits. The scheme provides opportunities for internationally competitive research projects to be conducted in collaboration with organisations outside the higher education sector, targeting those who have demonstrated a clear commitment to high-quality research; encourages growth of a national pool of world- class researchers to meet the needs of the broader Australian innovation system; and builds the scale and focus of research in the national Science and Research Priorities. The Linkage Infrastructure, Equipment and Facilities scheme encourages Eligible Organisations to develop collaborative arrangements with other Eligible Organisations and/or Partner

Organisations to develop and support research infrastructure. The scheme supports large-scale national or international cooperative initiatives, allowing expensive research infrastructure to be shared and/or accessed; supports areas of existing and/or emerging research strength; and supports and develops research infrastructure for the broader research community. The Special Research Initiatives scheme provides funding for new and emerging fields of research and builds capacity in strategically important areas. The scheme supports high-quality research which will assist in advancing Australia’s research excellence to be globally competitive and deliver benefits to the community. The ARC currently funds several Special Research Initiatives in a wide range of research areas.
