Pratt Recycling Mill Gets $125M Permit In Kentucky Conyers, Georgia based Pratt Industries se- cured a building permit valued at $125 million for a new 372,000-square-foot paper mill in Henderson, Kentucky. The mill will recycle used corrugated containers and other mate- rials to make paper for new corrugated boxes. When complete and operational, Pratt’s “industrial complex” will employ 325 people with “good paying” jobs. “This is the largest jobs announcement, we believe, in West- ern Kentucky in 25 years,” said Gov. Andy Beshear in a statement. The city of Henderson obtained the build- ing permit because the Pratt complex is being financed through an industrial revenue bond, and the city owns the 200-acre plant site on the Kentucky 425/South Bypass. Pratt General Manager Ed Kersey said the company’s investment in the complex, origi- nally put at $400 million, is now expected to total at least $500 million.

Initially an importer of folding boxes under the ownership of Frederick Haedrich Sr., the company moved into print production in the 1930s, supplying labels and cartons to local pharmacies and drug- stores in the New York metropolitan area. Today, grandson Steven Haedrich is company President, and under his shrewd guidance the business has become a leading single-source supplier of printed packaging from labels to cartons and specialty prod- ucts for markets as diverse as cosmetics, healthcare, food, beverage, and both pharma and nutraceutical products. “There really isn’t much CONTINUED ON PAGE 24 New York Label & Box President Steven Haedrich is the third generation to run the company.

U.S. Paper Industry Reaches 68 Percent Recyclablility Rate

T he American Forest & Paper Association (AF&PA) last week announced that 68 percent of all paper consumed in the United States was recycled in 2021 – a rate on par with the highest rate previously achieved. Additionally, the recycling rate for old corrugated containers (OCC), com- monly known as cardboard, increased. The rate was 91.4 percent in 2021, up from the 2020 rate of 88.8 percent, and overall, a three-year average of 90.5 percent. “Paper recycling is stronger than ever and remains an environmental success story,” said AF&PA President & CEO Heidi Brock. “In 2021, U.S. paper recycling reached a high rate of achievement. Further evidence that our in- dustry’s investment and public participation in recycling programs are proven and effective.” Paper recycling extends the life of fiber and advances the circular economy. It allows for the creation of new, sus- tainable paper-based packaging and products. “Our industry is a leader in sustainability and under- stands what it means to be a responsible producer,” Brock said. “We are investing nearly $5 billion in projects from 2019 through 2024 to use approximately eight million ad- ditional tons of recovered fiber. This reflects a longstand- ing commitment to invest in manufacturing infrastructure using recycled paper and improve the circular nature of our industry.” Visit www.afandpa.org/priorities/recycling for more information about U.S. paper recycling statistics. NAM: Despite Concerns, Solid Gains In Manufacturing, Production in April Financial markets continue to process higher interest rates and the Federal Reserve’s attempts to control inflation, ac- cording to Chad Moutray, Ph.D. and Chief Economist at the National Association of Manufacturers (NAM) Indeed, the Federal Open Market Committee is likely to hike the fed- eral funds rate by 50 basis points at each of its next two meetings (June 14–15 and July 26–27), and there are con- cerns about the Fed’s ability to navigate a “soft landing” in the outlook. Other uncertainties include the Ukrainian conflict and COVID-19-related shutdowns in China. Yet, industrial production and retail sales data contin- ued to show resilience—at least for now—bucking the pessimism seen in financial markets and the media. While there is increasing talk of recession possibilities, a down- turn is not inevitable, particularly if consumers and busi- nesses continue to spend. For the record, while I continue to forecast economic growth in 2022 and 2023, the risk of a recession next year is higher than this year, with significant downside risks in the outlook (but also ongoing strengths). NAM: Solid Gains (CONT’D FROM PAGE 5)

Box Shipments ( U.S. Corrugated Product Shipments) Industry Shipments In Billions of Square Feet Month March 2022

Manufacturing production rose 0.8 percent in April, expanding strongly for the third straight month, with the headline index notching its best reading since July 2008. In addition, manufacturing capacity utilization jumped to 79.2 percent in April, the highest reading since April 2007. Overall, manufacturing production has risen 5.8 percent year-over-year, with 4.6 percent growth relative to Febru- ary 2020’s pre-pandemic pace. Retail sales grew 0.9 percent in April, buoyed by re- bounding motor vehicles and parts spending and solid growth in most categories of consumer activity. At the same time, gasoline station sales—which are expressed in nominal terms—fell 2.7 percent in April, pulling back some- what after jumping 9.6 percent in March. Retail spending has soared 8.2 percent year-over-year, consistent with the reopening of the economy and with pent-up demand. Consumer spending remains a bright spot, even as Americans cope with higher prices. Yet, there were also signs that economic growth was slowing, with higher interest rates dampening activity. Manufacturing surveys from the New York and Philadel- phia Federal Reserve Banks were both notably weaker. Kentucky created the most net new manufacturing jobs in April, adding 6,000 workers, with Florida generating 16,300 workers in the sector since February 2020, the greatest of any state since the pandemic.

FBA Technical Committee Continues To Support The Corrugated Industry BY CHASE KAMMERER Part of the mission statement of the Fibre Box Association (FBA) Technical Committee is to “stay abreast of industry

the Board to contract research that benefits the corrugat- ed industry. The preliminary concept was to validate the environmental factors published in the Fibre Box Hand- book to date, using boxes in the current marketplace. The Committee was looking to update industry norms and extend the knowledge base for box manufacturing. The factors in the FBA Handbook were based on histori- cal literature, without the 1990s and later data. And recent literature raised questions about whether those factors truly represented what happens in a unit of stacked box- es today. Thus began a multi-year process to update the environmental factors for the Handbook. With two studies completed and two more underway: Impact of Relative Humidity on Top to Bottom Box Compression - In 2019, the Technical Committee complet- ed research on ambient humidity’s effects on box designs. The effect of Relative Humidity is one of the most signifi- cant considerations for corrugated packaging performance

developments and regulations and address all technical aspects of cor- rugated container manufacturing, shipment, and usage. Including de- sign and development of relevant projects, trials, studies, and the pro- duction/publication of technical liter- ature, brochures, and documents.”

Chase Kammerer

The Committee helps to answer industry-wide ques- tions through projects and other initiatives. So, beginning in 2017, the Technical Committee received approval from

and “Environmental Factor” development. The study, completed by Clemson Univer- sity, used current substrate performance data and provided results that allowed us to update numbers in the Handbook. You can read more about the research on our website. Also, see 2019 - 2nd Quarter - New Research - How Does Ambient Humidity Af- fect Modern Box Design, you can listen to a Free FBA webinar about the project. Impact of Stacking Pattern on Top to Bottom Box Compression - In 2020-21, the Technical Committee researched how stacking patterns impact BCT. The study, performed by the Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT), compared 32 ECT and 44 ECT columnar aligned, interlocked, and hybrid stacking patterns subjected to com- pression testing. You can read more about this study on our website and also click on 2021 - 2nd Quarter - New Research - How Does Stacking Pattern Impact BCT for a free FBA webinar about the project. Characterization of Scoring and Its Im- portance to BCT Strength - the Technical Committee will have concluded a study on the compression strength of scoring pro- files by 2022. Performed by the US Forest Service, Forest Products Laboratory, the ob- jective of the work is to evaluate a variety of commonly used scoring profiles on BCT. Effect of Pallet Overhang on Box Com- pression Strength - Currently, the Technical Committee is working with Virginia Tech to study the impact of pallet overhang on BCT. We expect to finish the project’s testing by the end of December and a final report, most likely in the first quarter of 2023.

Participants appreciate the ability to recognize their plants’ dedication to safety. “This is very meaningful to our teams,” one award winner wrote. “Safety is our number one priority.” For the calendar year 2021, the associations will pres- ent 136 Perfect Plant Awards to plants achieving zero incidents. An additional 274 facilities will receive Safety Excellence Awards for achieving no lost workdays due to job-related injury or illness. The report provides detailed data for more than 171 million hours worked at 723 participating plants. It also in- cludes trend information presented in graphs for record- able cases, restricted duty cases, and days away from work. Award winners are presented as a percentage of to- tal plant participation and the Safety Award Winners page serves as a great summary of achievement, including a count of winners by category, number of Perfect Plant Awards, number of Safety Excellence Awards, total awards given, and the percentage of plants awarded. Participation in the report was voluntary and open to all corrugator or sheet plant facilities manufacturing corru- gated products. Participants can visit the FBA website at www.fibrebox.org to view the full report. For more information about the Safety Awards Program or the 2021 Corrugated Container Industry Annual Report of Occupational Injuries and Illnesses, contact Stefanie Dozois at sdozois@fibrebox.org.

We couldn’t do the work without the collaboration of our member companies and the dedicated members of the Technical Committee. The research done by the Com- mittee has benefited the corrugated packaging industry and put our industry back on the radar with universities and institutions looking to complete research. As we continue this push to provide valuable research for the industry, we will be creating a new Technical Sub-committee that will pre-vet technical research projects for FBA funding. A concept submission document will be available to all FBA members who have ideas on research that can benefit the industry. Reach out if you would like to see a concept submission form once it’s available. Chase Kammerer is the Technical Services Manager at FBA. Reach him at ckammerer@fibrebox.org. 410 Corrugated Plants Recognized For Safety Achievements in 2021 The Fibre Box Association (FBA) and AICC – The Indepen- dent Packaging Association, will recognize 410 corrugat- ed industry plants for safety achievements in 2021. FBA Announces Launch Of Recruitment Video: ‘Now Hiring: Corrugated Packaging Industry’ BY RACHEL KENYON The Fibre Box Association (FBA) has announced the launch of a new corrugated industry recruitment video – “Now Hiring: The Corrugated Packaging Industry.” The video features corrugated industry employees talking about their jobs – what they like about them, how they got into the industry, and why the corrugated packaging industry is a good fit for anyone looking for a job that offers stability, growth opportunities, and a voice in the making of an everyday essential product.

A screen shot from the FBA recruitment video, as seen on YouTube.

The video comes as concerns mount about ensuring the continuation of talented and skilled plant employees across the corrugated packaging industry. Last month, I sat down with Tim Bergwall, Division President for Pa- per Packaging at Greif; Bob McIlvaine, President and CEO at The Royal Group; and Charles Malo, president and CEO at Cascades Container- board Packaging for a panel discussion on labor at the FBA Annual Meet- ing in Laguna Beach, California. All three panelists said their companies were experiencing labor short- ages and shared ideas for attracting workers to plant floor positions. Tim said they’ve streamlined their application process at Greif. Charles said they’re expanding their job fairs and Bob said they’re offering training to new hires on things like how to read a tape measure and other skills that build confidence to keep new workers on the job longer. Many in the audience also shared ideas about how to increase out- reach in their communities and educate potential workers about avail- able jobs in the industry. The new video becomes another tool in companies’ recruitment ef- forts. As a first-hand account from current employees, the video provides shared insights into what makes a job worth pursuing in the corrugat- ed packaging industry. Common themes heard throughout the video in- clude: • It’s not just a job, it’s a career with lots of opportunity for growth. • Working in the industry provides stability – “I’ve never been laid off.” “I’ve always had a job.” And “I’ve been able to provide for my family.”

Starch Off eliminates the need to scrape or chisel dried and gelled starch build-up from corrugator components. The patent pending system uses optimized biodegradable enzymes to quickly break through the surface of built-up starch and melt it away. Simply apply the foaming cleaner, let it soak and then hose it off. Starch Off can also be circu- lated through the starch system to remove starch build-up from the internal components. Starch Off is non-corrosive, non-hazardous, it is unique, simple to use, safe and effec- tive on all type of starches, including cross linked tapioca, wheat and corn. gest complaints we hear from operators and maintenance crews,” said Shawn Spencer, Dicar’s VP Sales. “They’re doing quick changeovers from one order to the next. They’re trying to minimize the down time between orders. It can be easy for ink and starch systems maintenance to get out of hand. Then suddenly anilox cells are plugged in the print units and print quality starts to suffer. When starch builds up the glue machines, singlefacers and other corru- gator components, it can be a costly and labor-intensive task to clean it up. Keeping the applicator rolls clean, de- livers stronger and flatter board and increases production output. That’s where the benefits and advantages of the CleanPrint products come into play.” In only a 2-4 minute wash cycle, the patented Evolu- tion BioClean system flushes and cleans the entire ink system, pumps, anilox rolls, doctor blades, chambers, tub- ing and pipes, any place ink circulates. The Evolution Bio- Clean solution is an environmentally safe biodegradable, non-corrosive, non-hazardous water-based complex for- mulation with a blend of engineered enzymes that quickly liquefies dried ink and flushes the ink system clean. When used with the patented CleanPrint automatic cleaning system, anilox performance and life is improved and production output is increased. Depending on your shift structure, you may increase your production output and revenue by up to an extra hour per day. The solution

tional standards. Quest is also FSC, SFI and PEFC certified. “Our goal is to be able to better serve our customers, meet their needs, and grow our business alongside our customers,” says Cribbin. “We are already successfully op- erating a Koenig & Bauer 64-inch press so that played a big part in our decision to add another Rapida. Koenig & Bauer is a great company, they make a great press, and their sales and service teams are world class. This new Rapida press will give us the ability and versatility to suc- cessfully deliver the highest quality work for litho labels, top sheets, folding cartons, specialty packaging, and large format work for the trade.” Steve Korn, Director of National and Key Accounts, Koenig & Bauer, adds, “This new Rapida 164 press in- vestment made by Quest Graphics signals that the larg- est independent Missouri printer for litho label and top sheet printing for packaging applications has chosen to invest with Koenig & Bauer to provide access to higher technology for its existing and growing roster of clients. We congratulate Dan Cribbin and his entire team on what they have accomplished, their remarkable growth in both sales and physical facilities, and even more important, on their extremely talented team who focus on customer sat- isfaction each and every day. We are certain that this new Rapida 164 large format press will efficiently drive more jobs and volume through Quest’s production facilities, fuel ongoing growth, and continue its high quality and on-time service for years to come.”

significant gains over the past 43 years. But it foresees making an even larger industry impact on the horizon. “We have grown significantly over the last two years and have invested in new equipment to ensure that we al- ways have the latest technology,” says Dan Cribbin, Pres- ident and CEO. “As our customers have asked for faster turnaround times and for us to handle a greater volume of their work, we invested in a key purchase with a new Koenig & Bauer Rapida 164 six-color plus coater press. It will provide us with greater capacity and allow us to grow significantly.” The innovative new generation model will be a trans- formational press at Quest, offering Koenig & Bauer’s Er- goTronic ColorControl system that provides automatic ink density measurement, ErgoTronic ColorCheck for color evaluation, VariDry IR/HA dryer for water-based coatings, and fully automated plate change, which, in under two minutes, changes all the plates on the press. It will join a current Koenig & Bauer Rapida 64-inch sheetfed press. “At Quest, quality is priority Number One,” says Cribbin, as he and his team pride themselves on being a G7 Certi- fied Master Printer. This status means that Quest’s people, equipment, and systems have passed rigorous testing and earned the G7 seal, proving that the company possesses the technology and tools to consistently deliver the high- est quality printing based on the most stringent interna-

we can’t do these days in the label and carton sectors and our customers have come to rely on our ability to deliver a variety of printed packaging that is right first time, every time,” he commented. Knowing how important packaging is to a product’s success, Haedrich knows that a combination of innovation and competitive pricing is what is needed to drive new business in today’s market. “We aim to deliver the most appealing, durable and affordable folding cartons and if you want something a bit special, like a custom substrate, coating or adhesive, then we have the knowledge and expertise to deliver on that too,” he said. “Shelf impact is what it’s all about if you’re looking for a competitive edge.” Latest Technology Fully self-sufficient from design studio to delivery, New York Label & Box uses the latest CAD technology to pro- duce 3D samples which are then printed sheet fed offset with UV curing and converted by a raft of modern offline technology. This method of production is the traditional approach to folding cartons and remains fundamental to

the company’s success – but Haedrich knew that he need- ed to engage in some lateral thinking if he was to ‘break out of the box’ and break into new markets. “We’d been looking at inline flexo for some time, but nothing had caught our eye in terms of specification for the requirements we have,” said Haedrich. “That was until we met Edale and saw the FL5 press. It appeared to move the game on in terms of flexible production capability and still offered top quality print.” Key to the FL5’s appeal was its 20-inch (510mm) web width and ability to handle up to 27pt (700-micron) board. With a rail system capable of taking added features like cold or hot foil and lamination, and a flat-bed die-cutter, the modular design and build of the FL5 makes it as fu- ture-proof as is possible with today’s technology. “It was the demonstration that really convinced us of its commercial viability. We saw how easy it was to make- ready and run, and no matter what processes were in- volved, the end product was always up to the quality standards that our customers demand,” he added. In fact,

according to Haedrich, one of the issues they have selling the new production concept to carton buyers is their dis- belief that the FL5 can do so much, so well, in one pass. So, the company has resorted to its own online demos to prove the case for the FL5. “It’s a real game changer and for us, it points the way ahead,” he said. In fairness to New York Label & Box, the Edale technol- ogy is familiar territory. Having produced roll labels since the 1960s, the company is well set-up for inline flexo pro- duction and all that single-pass production includes. “If you compare it with traditional carton work, it’s both time and space saving, as well as less wasteful, which is im- portant when you consider the cost of some of the stocks we use. In an era when sustainability is the word on every- one’s lips in our industry, we think inline production has a strong case to make,” said Haedrich. Good Partnership Any reticence the U.S. company had initially about in- vesting in UK technology was quickly dispelled with an in- stallation and commissioning that went “like clockwork,” and Haedrich is keen to acknowledge the ongoing sup- port he has received from Edale. “From set up to operator training, it’s been an easy learning curve for us thanks to Edale’s technicians, and now the FL5 is up and running in full commercial operation we can substantiate the claims

they make about its cost-effectiveness. I’d say we can gen- uinely look at savings of 20-30 percent across a variety of carton jobs.” For Edale, this installation at New York Label & Box is an exciting ‘first’ in the North American market and is even more significant because inline flexo carton production is an established and well-proven concept there. Where Eu- rope has always been the heart of sheet fed offset press manufacture and offline converting, America has long since embraced alternative production methods. Speaking for Edale, James Boughton, CEO, said, “In a market that’s price-sensitive, it’s important to strike the

right balance between investment cost and production capability. The concept only works if it makes mon- ey. What we have achieved with the FL5 is a serious and viable alterna- tive process for carton production that fills a niche at a time when run lengths are shortening and more

versioning is required to cope with an increase in SKUs.” New York Label & Box was quick to assess the situation and see the benefit, and it is surely only a matter of time before the concept is taken up by other carton houses and narrow web converters looking to diversify into fold- ing cartons.
