A GLIMPSE OF THE KIND OF WORK ONE OF OUR EVANGELISTS HAS BEEN DOING (TH IS MEETING WAS AT OCEANSIDE, CALIF.)
in the Bible as the very Word, o f God?’ Again he replied ‘Yes.’ I mentioned the fact that ‘all have sinned and come short o f the glory o f God,’ and he readily assented to this. “ ‘Do you believe you deserve to be in this jail ?’ I asked. “ He said, ‘I certainly do.’ “ I went a bit further: ‘Do you believe you deserve to go to hell?’ To my surprise he replied, ‘Yes, I believe I do.’ “ ‘You don’t want to go to hell/do you?’ I asked. ‘You certainly want to go to heaven!’ “ He answered, ‘I want to go to heaven.’ “ ‘Do you not, know the road that leads there?’ I asked. “ ‘That’s it,’ he answered. ‘I have tried all my life and never succeeded in finding it. I f I could only live a good life!’ “ Then I explained to him that he could not live a good life in order TO BE a Christian, but that he MUST BE BORN a Christian and then the good life would follow. “ He was sentenced to seven years in San Quentin. When I left him, quoting Jno. 3 :16 and other verses on salvation, he pressed against the bars and tried to reach his hand through to me. I quoted Romans 5 :10 and told him it was by the death of Jesus Christ that he might be reconciled to God. “ The next Sunday I found him still there and anxious to see me. He promptly told me something pleasing to my heart. He had found the joy of salvation! He had come to know that his sins, every one, were washed away. Some have said jail work is not worth the time and trouble. I f I knew of but this one soul redeemed, I should feel amply repaid for my efforts; but I find God constantly honoring His Word among these men who are down and out.” One Little Girl’s Prayers Were Answered A little Mexican-Catholic girl had been faithfully at tending one o f our Euodia Club meetings. She was very eager to go to the Euodia Conference, never having at
tended one. Two days before the Conference she asked if there would be an opportunity for her to go. Financial means were finally found wherewith she could be sent. It was necessary to get the mother’s consent. Her mother cannot speak English. The family live in just one little room. The wall is papered with newspaper. On the mantel there is a huge black cross. It is a gloomy, dismal room. The mother asked if any boys would be there, and if older women would be there to care for the girls. The father was opposed to letting his daughter go. God answered prayer and Carmen was at the Con ference, her face beaming because her prayer had been heard. Besides the message she received, she went for ward and testified. She was a transformed girl. She was to be the only one in her home who was a Christian. This was pointed out to her. Carmen looked up and an swered : “ That is what I will have to endure. I will be faithful.” At the next Euodia Club meeting Carmen was there, all smiles, and had brought another girl with her. Ross Meetings Going Strong. Rev. Britton Ross and his associate and director of music, Rev. Leo Polman, of the Evangelistic Department, have been busy during the summer conducting tent meet ings throughout Southern California. Fields reached in cluded south Los Angeles at 81st and Central, Ocean Park and Santa Monica. Reports o f these several meetings in dicate that the consecrated service of these capable and devoted leaders has been greatly blessed. In addition to large numbers o f conversions, there have been many dedications of lives to Christian service. There will be students in the Institute this coming year whose faces were turned this way through these meetings. Mr. Ross’s schedule for the Fall time is now practically full. Those desiring the services o f the Ross-Polman party dur ing the year 1929 should communicate at once with the Evangelistic Department of the Institute. Hundreds of New Friends for Biola.
