Social Value Project of the Year

Excellence in Health & Safety and Wellbeing WINNER: LOWRY BUILDING & CIVIL ENGINEERING

GEDA went above and beyond in maximising social, environmental and economic outcomes when delivering this project, according to judges. Surpassing its initial social value targets, the contractor forged strong collaborative relationships and robust communication channels with civic, church and education organisations in the local area. Social Value was embedded as an overarching strategy within the delivery of the project and visible in the robust local relationships forged. Strong communication and collaboration with local housing, community and church organisations addressed potential challenges arising from the disruption experienced by local residents. The support of the client, Northern Ireland Water, was also evident in this successful strategy. WINNER: GEDA CONSTRUCTION - RAVENHILL AVENUE FLOOD ALLEVIATION SCHEME, BELFAST

With judges seeking evidence of a positive culture rather than a box-ticking approach to health & safety and wellbeing in the workplace, Lowry struck a chord with its mission statement, ‘we look after each other’.

Lowry Building & Civil Engineering.

Praise was extended across entrants visited by the Construction Excellence Awards judging panel, all of whom were said to be worthy potential winners, with the category incredibly hard to shortlist. Health & safety and wellbeing should be regarded not as a compliance process, but rather the development of a culture of care and personal behaviours that result in a safe and supportive working environment for staff, subcontractors, clients and all who interact with the construction process, according to the category criteria. Lowry shone through with its policy of encouraging its entire workforce to contribute to ensuring the workplace, and beyond, is a safe and healthy environment. Using technology to help monitor and improve the working environment and initiatives to encourage wellbeing, the contractor nailed the task with its empathetic mission statement.
