Ganson emerged as a clear winner for Fit-Out Project of the Year, with judges dazzled by the different look and feel achieved across room2 Belfast’s 175 suites. A newly-constructed, nine-storey building on a restricted corner site in the heart of Belfast City Centre, the ‘hometel’ has been fit out to a high standard. On entering the ground-floor lobby, visitors are presented with an explosion of colour and visual interest with a collection of materials and different textures in this space creating vibrancy and fun for guests. Working with local suppliers and up-and-coming designers, the thought-provoking and unique space features clever layouts and sustainable products throughout. Combining precise, complex construction with innovative presentation of existing materials and fabric, Felix O’Hare’s reimagining of the Crumlin Road Gaol’s A-Wing as a distillery and visitor centre was recognised by judges as a category-winning transformation. The layout of the former cells, floor areas, windows, doors and stairs are re-used or referenced, harmoniously bringing old and new together. Removal of internal walls presented a structural challenge, overcome by introducing new exposed steelwork which, when completed, appear to be part of the original design. Installation of Forsythe distilling equipment required working to a few millimetres of tolerance in respect of the building fabric, requiring great expertise and skill.
