GB & RoI Construction Project of the Year, below £5m WINNER: MCKELVEY CONSTRUCTION – THE JUNCTION, CO LEITRIM L-R: Darren McKelvey, McKelvey Construction, with Claire McCollum, host, Christopher Mallon, Speedy Hire (sponsor), Michael Colton, McKelvey Construction, and Phil Spencer, host. McKelvey Construction has transformed old derelict railway station and coach house buildings into a new multipurpose community facility. Charged with preserving the local heritage assets for future generations while creating modern, shared facilities for community initiatives, the contractor rose to the challenge. Priority was given to retention, refurbishment and reuse of all original fabric, including original bricks, slates, floor timbers and sash windows, with additional reclaimed materials also sourced and matched to maintain historical accuracy. Heritage building techniques were used, with senior tradesmen partnered with trained juniors to transfer traditional skills, and original features such as the entrance door, ticket booth, waiting bench and stairs were reconstructed.

Apprentice of the Year WINNER: HARRY MCFARLAND, DAWSON-WAM
An exemplary apprentice and community-minded individual, who serves as an ambassador for his industry and the farming community, Harry McFarland is Apprentice of the Year 2024. Harry joined DAWSON-WAM as its first-ever engineering apprentice in 2022 straight from Saintfield High School, where he developed his leadership and communication skills as head boy. Committed to a career in the construction industry, he immediately brought a positive attitude and eagerness to learn to the role. “Starting in the estimating department, I gained basic industry knowledge before moving on site, where I shadowed senior staff and took on responsibilities like managing paperwork and ordering materials,” said Harry. Currently studying for an Extended National Diploma in Civil Engineering, Harry also sets aside time to promote the benefits of apprenticeships. He has promoted apprenticeships in construction to over 600 students, earning a health and safety award for a presentation at his old school, and participating in three CITB events. His enthusiasm also extends to his role as assistant secretary for Killinchy Young Farmers, as well as helping local farmers in the evenings and assisting with a church youth group on Friday nights. Peter Kerr, HSEQ Director, said, “Harry’s enthusiasm for construction and his dedication to his work and community activities have made him a valuable member of DAWSON-WAM. His journey so far indicates a promising future in the construction industry, driven by his passion and proactive approach.”
