SMET SUPPLIED ITS NHL 3.5 SCUD COAT, BAUPROCALC 830 BASE COAT, AND BAUPROCALC KG FINISH SKIM FOR INTERNAL PLASTERWORK DURING THE TRANSFORMATION OF TWO GRADE II-LISTED BUILDINGS INTO THE NEW SEAMUS HEANEY CENTRE AT QUEEN’S UNIVERSITY, BELFAST… Restoring old and historic buildings
SMET Building Products Ltd supplies a comprehensive range of sustainable, high-quality natural hydraulic lime (NHL) binders and mortars ideal for historic restoration projects. Requiring a delicate balance between preserving historical authenticity and incorporating modern sustainability practices, historical restorations are essential for maintaining the island of Ireland’s architectural heritage and cultural identity. SMET’s pre-mixed lime renders and plasters and NHL binders for making mortar have been used to restore and repair old and historic buildings across Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland. Among recent projects are the Seamus Heaney Centre at Queen’s University Belfast, where SMET worked alongside IFP Ltd, principal plastering contractor on behalf of main contractor GEDA, to transform two Grade II-listed buildings into a vibrant, modern space. SMET supplied its NHL 3.5 scud coat, bauprocalc 830 base coat, and bauprocalc KG finish skim for internal plasterwork during the renovation of this important historic building. Why use lime-based render and plaster? SMET’s bauprocalc products are CE- marked, factory-produced hydraulic hardening skim coat plasters and render based on lime. Specially designed for hand and machine application and produced to DIN EN 998-1, bauprocalc KG and bauprocalc 830 contribute to a healthy internal atmosphere. The products offer an excellent alternative to plaster and renders containing gypsum or patent cement which are too strong and have less vapour-permeable qualities. They are ideal for kitchens, bathrooms and rooms where high humidity levels are expected. bauprocalc KG produces a mortar that is softer than cement mortar. After the initial set, stability and strength gradually build up over time, allowing

enough flexibility to cope with minor settlement or movement in the building during this period, thereby reducing the risk of cracking. bauprocalc 830 has unique properties, making it suitable for application on low-, medium- and high-density substrates, particularly when renovating old/listed buildings or ecological new builds. Good vapour permeability performance allows an unhindered transference of excess internal moisture through the building to the outside, thereby contributing significantly to a balanced and healthy internal atmosphere.
