Family and Office October Traditions Trick-or-Treating and Setting Goals October 2019
October is usually a busy time of year for my team and me. Near the beginning of the month, we get together for a large team meeting where we map out what we’re going to do as an office the following year. These meetings are dedicated to setting goals, determining promotions, planning fun activities to host, and deciding which charity drives we’ll participate in throughout the upcoming year. We usually do these meetings off-site, often getting lunch together Once we have our goals set, we spend the last half of the month celebrating Halloween. Our team gets into the spirit by dressing up and decorating the office with spiders and fake webs. Last year, our theme centered on scientists. I dressed as a mad scientist, and everyone jumped on board to be the “geeks” who would typically follow a mad scientist around.The aesthetic was complete with funky glasses and a crazy wig, and I even perfected a mad scientist’s walk. Everyone had a really fun time, and the patients got a kick out of it too. and taking a half day to get everything organized. It’s a powerful month for us at SouthWindsor Smiles.
My grandkids also enjoy a trick-or-treating event in their elementary school parking lot called “Trunk-or-Treat.”The parents who participate bring their cars and open up their trunks to hand out candy for a few hours. Sometimes, they come all dressed up in costumes and decorate the backs of their cars with smoking cauldrons or spooky Halloween music.The kids love this event because many of their school friends from other neighborhoods across town are there and they get to dress up and experience Halloween together! A few of my grandkids are pretty excited about getting candy this year, but I’m not sure how many will go.The oldest is turning 13, so she might be at the age where she’s outgrown this particular Halloween tradition. My youngest grandchild will be around 1 1/2, so I’m not sure if he’ll be quite old enough to trick-or-treat. Last year, his parents had him dressed as a lion, and he was the cutest. I know that no matter what they do this year, my grandkids are going to have a great time. In addition to all the Halloween hype and goal setting, October is the month for fall sports to really get going. I’m very excited to be in the midst of the college football season this month and to see which teams come out on top. Besides rooting for my favorite teams, my son coaches football, and I always enjoy seeing how far his players come during his games. Many of our parents are also looking forward to the start of the season to cheer their kids on in the various sports they’re entering. It’s fun to celebrate this time of year by asking our patients which sports their kids are into, how they’re doing so far, and what they’re looking forward to. October has always been one of the best times of the year to talk with fellow enthusiastic parents about sports. No matter how you might celebrate this month, whether it’s setting personal goals, awaiting Halloween, or watching your favorite sport, I hope you have a fantastic October.
My family has always celebrated Halloween. I’d take my kids out through the neighborhood when they were younger to go trick-or-treating, with my son dressed as Batman and me as Superman year after year. Now, they’re grown with kids of their own. Fortunately, my son’s family is only 15 minutes away, so I can get over to see the grandkids’ costumes and man their house ... Plus, this allows me to be there afterward to hear about their adventures!

JUST IN T IME FOR HALLOWEEN No-Carve Pumpkin Designs!
happy Jack-o’-lanterns go hand-in-hand with Halloween, but digging through the inside of a pumpkin is not something everyone enjoys. If you aren’t keen on cutting open a pumpkin, here are a few no-carve ideas you can try this Halloween! HAUNTED HOUSE Take a few pumpkins, stack them on top of each other, and create a spooky pumpkin haunted house!Then, use paint, balsa wood sheets, and hot glue to create silhouettes, ghosts, windows, and doors for a haunting effect! CREATIVEWITH STRING Use cotton twine and hot glue to create a web-like design on the surface of your pumpkin. Don’t forget to add a few plastic spiders!You can also use string art to create ghostly words or images. Lay our your design with small pegs or nails and wrap the string around them to reach your desired effect. NOTHING BUT NET You can create eerie pumpkins using fishnet stockings. Spray-paint your pumpkin if desired — just make sure the design of the stockings will stand out. Once the
paint is dry, cut the legs off the stockings, slide the pumpkin inside, remove the extra fabric around the stem, and use hot glue to secure it. COLORFUL PAINT Painting your Halloween pumpkins gives everyone a chance to participate. Be creative by using different designs, cutouts for silhouettes, drip paint to create a marble design, or nail polish and water to give white pumpkins a unique and vibrant look. A SPOOKY MONSTER By adding a witch hat, wrapping a pumpkin in cheesecloth, attaching spider legs, or tying on a vampire cape, you can create a pumpkin version of the most popular Halloween monsters. Along with these accessories, you can also use paint, construction paper, and other craft materials to add the details that will make your creation pop!
