FdSc Payroll Management
Nicola Pattinson, senior lecturer and programme lead at Lincoln International Business School: University of Lincoln, outlines the FdSc Payroll Management programme’s key areas of focus
P ayroll is such an emotive subject, affecting every employee and business in the UK. The FdSc Payroll Management (UK payroll) programme at Lincoln’s International Business School delves into all those complex areas of payroll that those working outside of the industry don’t always necessarily see. These include exciting specialism areas within employment law, designed to support adherence to current and dynamic UK employment law in payroll-focussed areas, including: ● the employment contract ● employee status ● legal recruitment and selection ● data compliance ● employment benefits. Other specialism areas that are often unseen by many, but that the programme explores, relate to key knowledge, skills and behaviours required by the payroll practitioner to enable them to work effectively in a fast-paced professional environment. Accruing competence in these areas provides the payroll professional with the ability to identify and solve intricate payroll problems, and to manage frequent change to complex payroll systems, processes and procedures, through creativity and innovation. The programme also investigates many other important aspects of payroll, including management and leadership development which moves past the basic management skills and focusses on the dynamic role of the individual in leading and managing teams within the payroll setting. Additionally, valuable study tools and techniques are embedded into the qualification, allowing the practitioner to develop an impressive study toolkit that they can draw on throughout their academic journey. Many full-time working practitioners are already juggling very busy careers and family life. The FdSc Payroll Management is a work-based distance learning programme which has been
developed over the course of 20 years and aims to satisfy the study needs of people who are in full-time employment. The flexible work-based teaching and learning strategy allows the practitioner to apply their payroll context to different management theory areas throughout the sequentially completed modules. To support the busy practitioner’s work-study balance, modules are delivered through a fully online learning approach. Learning is primarily independent, with students being guided to appropriate, engaging and accessible resources, with some online seminars facilitated by experienced tutors, as well as lecture materials, directed reading and questions designed to encourage reflection and critical thinking. A personal approach is adopted, which focusses on individual needs and support. Payroll professionals can build a portfolio of
or above to enrol. it recognises the importance of their experience with a university degree; or for those who might be starting out and have chosen payroll as a profession. It recognises the importance of this function by placing the payroll practitioner on the same level as other comparable Chartered professions, such as accountancy or finance. The programme has been developed in collaboration with IPP Education Ltd, which payroll employers will recognise as a symbol of quality and compliance. The programme is also CIPP approved, offering a gold seal from the professional body for payroll in the UK. The practitioner will become a member of the CIPP, offering them professional body status and direct access to specialist expertise to support their work- based projects. Completion of the FdSc Payroll Management not only leads to a qualification, but it also acts as a bridge to a full BA degree. The skills accrued in building these portfolios can be transferred and used immediately, which supports competence and can form part of the practitioner's assessment. Its design enables the practitioner to develop their professional skills and knowledge within an operational payroll context, and to acquire and demonstrate the skills, knowledge and understanding required of a graduate within a management role. It provides a clear career pathway for those in the profession who may already be competent and would like to recognise their experience with a university degree, and students must be an associate member of the CIPP
