three-fold relation: to God, to oth­ ers, and to ourselves. Lawlessness extends beyond the Ten Com­ mandments. There was sin in the world long before God ever gave the Law at Mt. Sinai. It is basically a life problem. Everything that is not right, according to God's stand­ ard, is sin. We are sinners by na­ ture. The sin nature can never be eradicated in this life. To deny the existence of impulses and affec­ tions of sensual desires, at least in the thought life, is to deceive one­ self. Spiritual pride has blinded our eyes. Just as the walker in darkness

cannot find fellowship with God, no more can the walker in light claim that he does not have the sin nature. Beware of false perfec­ tionism. Then there is also the erroneous and foolish denial of the practice of sins (I John 1:10). This verse is in the perfect tense referring to an action completed in past time but which has present results. If we say that we have not committed acts of sin in the past, implying that we cannot commit any acts of sin now, the Bible says we are liars. This is what is known as sinless Page 33
