Applicable Safety Sign Standards Occupations Safety & Health Administration: OSHA 29 CFR 1910.145: Specifications for accident prevention signs. American National Standards Institute: ANSI Z535.1, .2, .3, .4, .5, .6: Six standards that specify format, colors, and symbols for accident prevention safety signs. Recognized by OSHA. The standards for basic sign requirements are covered under the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA 29 CFR § 1910.154), and the American National Standards Institute (ANSI Z535) provides specifications, design, application and use of Headers, Legends and Symbols. These signs are intended to indicate potential, type of degree of the hazard that may lead to acci- dental injury or property damage. Safety Sign Header Markings

DANGER — Indicates an imminently hazardous situation which, if not avoided, will result in death or serious injury . WARNING — Indicates a potentially hazardous situation which, if not avoided, could result in death or serious injury . CAUTION — Indicates a potentially hazardous situation which, if not avoided, could result in minor or moderate injury . NOTICE — Preferred signal word to address practices not related to personal injury. SAFETY FIRST, THINK, EMERGENCY — Indicates general instructions relative to safe work practices or indicates the location of safety equipment.

Basic Safety Sign Selections

Header A “signal” word (or words) to designate the level of safety alert-fullness re- quired, always located in the uppermost portion of the sign. Intended to cap- ture and direct attention to the potentially hazard- ous situation.

Symbol Pictorials are graphic representations to clearly convey a specific alerting message compatible with and supplemental to the legend message. Universal in design and standardized to be easily understood.

Legend The specific short message conveys the need to pay attention to a potential hazard or hazards, or take a necessary action to avoid such hazard(s).
