King's Business - 1920-09

THE KING' S BUSINESS inquirer. She said in effect, “ I will go and state my case and see this man face to face and talk over all the great problems which make life so painful.” She put herself to trouble on her own spiritual account, therefore she became a prepared listener. We must be sup pliants intensely interested in our own prayers and so enriched with patience and with the grace of rational expecta tion that God may see in us a wait ing posture. There would be more Solomons if there were more queens of Sheba.-S-Parker. The only way in these old days to learn the wisdom of the wise was to go to them. Even in regard to lower kinds of truth to win them is worth the effort of a life and in regard to the highest kind which is the per sonal truth, he is the wise man who counts all earthly good but loss for the excellency of the knowledge of it. This queen points the path by which all pil grims of the truth must travel.—Mac- laren. Heard of the fame. Note her seven steps: Heard, v. 1; Came, v. 2; Communed, v. 2; Saw, v. 4; Said, v. 6 ; Gave, v. 10; Returned, v. 13.—Comp. Bible. Hard questions. We may come to a greater than Solomon. He may not immediately reveal the answer as Solomon did, but will put His Spirit into our hearts and having the anoint ing of the Spirit, we shall know all things (1 Jn. 2:27). Though the mind cannot grasp, the heart will be at rest. — Meyer. Perhaps some of the follow ing were among the questions. How can man be just with God? (Job 9 :2). Who can say, “ I have made my heart clean?” (Prov. 20:9). How can a man be born again? (Jn. 3 :9). How can God be just and justify the sinner? (Rom. 3:26). If a man die, shall he live again? (John 14:14). How are the dead raised? (1 Cor. 15:35). Hath God said? (Gen. 3 :1).—K. B. v. 2. Communed with Solomon. A greater than Solomon did this when He was on earth and will do it when He

Abun dant indeed but nothing to the food on our King’s table, the Word of God (Job 23:12; Jer. 15:16; Ps. 119:103; Jn. 6:55). Christ in the Word of God is our milk (1 Pet. 2 :2), Bread (Jn. 6:35), Water (Rev. 22:17), Wine (Eph. 5:18), Fruit (Gal. 5:22), Meat (Heb. 5:12-14).— Brooks. v. 6 . Thy wisdom. The wisdom of God was in him (1 Kgs. 3:28; 4:30, 31). Our Lord Jesus Christ is the anti typical fulfilment of this great endow ment. The wisdom of God was in Him, nay, He Is the very wisdom of God (1 Cor. 1:30; Col. 2 :3 ).— Haldeman. v. 7. I believed not thy words. We should be gentle to those who on hear ing of the wealth in Christ say, “ How can these things be?” The Gospel must stagger men before it really lays hold of their deepest confidence and turns them heavenward. Have faith in men who are staggered by the great ness of the Gospel.— People’s Bible. I came. Her coming was a foreshadow ing of the time when the kings of Sheba shall come bringing their gifts to that Son of David of whom Solomon was but a type (Ps. 72:10, 15; Is. 60:6-9).— Torrey. She was determined to know the truth. The Lord would have us seek Him in all earnestness and if we so seek Him, He will be found of us (Ps. 27:8; Is. 55:6; Matt. 7 :7).—Haldeman. Mine- eyes have seen. Christ mentions this queen’s in quiry after God through Solomon as showing the stupidity of those who would not inquire after God through Jesus Christ who was God manifest in the flesh and therefore better able to instruct them than anyone else.-—Sum. Bible. The highest use to be made of this story is that which Christ made of
