The BEST ENGINEERING PROJECT of 2018

M & E Engineers Verizon HQ Cooling Towers Basking Ridge, NJ

French & Parrello Associates T. Thomas Fortune House Red Bank, NJ

Type of project: Historic Restoration GFA:3,150 SF The T. Thomas Fortune House is one of two National Historic Landmarks in the State of New Jersey that is significant to Afri- can American history. Built in the 1800’s in the Borough of Red Bank, NJ, it was the home of T. Thomas Fortune, who was born a slave and became a journalist, civil rights activist, writer, editor and publisher. The structure was abandoned in 2006 and quickly started to deteriorate. FPA provided structural and civil engineering services to Roger Mumford Homes (RMH), who un- dertook the restoration. RMH completed the restoration and deeded the structure to the T. Thomas Fortune Foundation, where the structure will be used as a cultural Cen- ter honoring Mr. Fortune’s Legacy.

Type of project: Infastructure Upgrade This project was originally to provide repairs to the structural steel dunnage platform that supports six cooling tower for the Verizon Headquarters in Basking Ridge, NJ. Given the extent of the repairs needed and risk of replacing the steel with the towers in place, combined with the age of the existing towers, it became apparent that it would be more feasible and practical in the long run to replace the towers at the same time as the platform work. This transformed this relatively simple and seemingly low cost project into a much more complex and expensive undertaking. Since the condenser water system operates 24x7, temporary cool- ing towers and pumps were put into place to keep the facility operational while the replacement work is occurring.
