Introduce types of help Mental health support A young person with poor mental health will generally recover more quickly with appropriate professional help. However, they may not know about the various options that are available to them, such as medication, counselling/psychological therapy, support for family members, and assistance with educational goals. Young adults can also access assistance with employment, income, and accommodation. Discuss which services they think are most appropriate and the best way to access them. This will vary depending on the young person’s age. Provide leaflets, websites, or phone numbers where possible. Some professional medical services include: – Medical treatments, including various types of prescribed medications and other treatments given by a doctor – Psychological therapies, providing a supportive relationship and changing the way the person thinks or behaves. Usually, these therapies are delivered by talking one-to-one with a mental health professional, either face-to-face or online, or sometimes in a group. These talks will be designed to address issues and to promote personal growth and coping skills – Rehabilitation programmes, helping young people to regain skills and confidence in order to live and work in their community
