Action 4: Encourage the young person to get appropriate professional help cont.

Discuss services and treatment Both young people and GPs often voice frustration over their experiences struggling to navigate the complexity of the health system (107). The young person you are supporting may want to discuss their treatment options and the possible steps to recovery. Offer to share the following information: Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS) CAMHS is an umbrella term for collective services that support young people experiencing poor mental health. CAMHS consist of a range of specialist professionals which typically include psychiatrists, psychologists, family therapists, and community nurses. CAMHS also consist of specialist outpatient and inpatient services for the most serious issues, for example eating disorder units. CAMHS also work with schools, charities, and local authorities. Help and support from these professionals and services includes: – Specialist mental health assessment, treatment, and support for young people and their families – Guidance to other professionals such as youth workers, teachers, social workers, GPs, and school nurses – Joint services with other agencies to ensure adequate care and monitoring of a young person and their family, and to advocate for support from other services, including community-based services for young carers (108) A helpful way to introduce CAMHS to a young person, and to reduce uncertainties about their experience of professional help, is to use the THRIVE model of CAMHS. The model outlines the groups of children and young people that each tier applies to and the sort of support that they may need (109).
