What does a psychotherapist do? Psychotherapists are specialists who generally work as part of a multi-disciplinary CAMHS team and can help by providing: – Therapeutic approaches that pay attention to the early experiences of the young person as a way of gaining an understanding of current challenges – Interpersonal psychotherapy – a type of therapy that helps to resolve conflict, cope with grief, or address changes or issues in a person’s relationships Psychotherapists are not medically qualified so cannot prescribe medication. What does a psychiatrist do? Psychiatrists are medical specialists who treat poor mental health and can help by providing: – Medication expertise, prescriptions, and support with any side-effects – Treatment and support for people who have severe or long- lasting issues – Treatment and support for people who experience poor mental health in combination with other health issues (112)
