Action 4: Encourage the young person to get appropriate professional help cont.
There are many different types of medication for different mental health conditions. Some people like to try the medication that their doctor recommends, whilst others like to do their own research first to discuss with their doctor. Those who do their own research may do this either by looking at the information on the box or by doing reading online. In most cases, young people have the choice to not take medication or a specific medication. However, if there are risks that a young person could harm themselves or someone else, they may be sectioned and the choice to not take medication may be taken away from them. It is important to know that: – Not all medication works for everyone – Lots of medication takes time to start working and longer to reach its full potential – All medications have side effects – but not everyone gets them, and each person is affected differently A young person may need to try a few medications and different dosages before they find the right one. If they are worried about medication, they should be empowered to talk to their doctor or a trusted adult (114). Family and friends can offer practical support to a young person while they get used to their medication. They can: – Help to ask the right questions – Remember what the doctor said on behalf of the young person – Access and pick up prescriptions on time – Set reminders to take medication at the right time and dosage
