– Notice when symptoms improve, and watch for any side effects (115) Talk through what happens at a CAMHS assessment Before receiving treatment from CAMHS, the young person will go through an assessment. The young person you are supporting may want details about what this entails. Offer to share the following information. Who will be at the assessment? You will normally meet one or two members of the CAMHS team. If you’re under 16 years old, your parent(s)/carer(s) will usually be invited to join, but you can also see the team by yourself if you would prefer. If you or your parent/carer is not confident speaking English, CAMHS can provide an interpreter. Where will the assessment take place? It will generally take place at a CAMHS clinic, but it may also be held at your school or home. The team will discuss the best place to meet before your assessment (116). How long will the assessment last? Usually one hour. What will happen during the assessment? An ‘assessment’ might sound scary, but it’s normally just a chat, like with the GP. It’s so the CAMHS team can get to know you and your background, and think about what could help you. When you meet, the team will ask you questions to understand what you are struggling with and to get a better idea of what support you need. They may ask questions like:

– Can you describe how you are feeling? – How long have you been feeling this way? – Is how you are feeling getting worse? – Is anyone worried about your safety?
