– How is the way you are feeling affecting your daily life? What is life at home and school/education/work like? – What would you like to change in your life? – What might help tackle the problems you are experiencing? What would you like to achieve at CAMHS? – Do you have anyone to talk to about your mental health? (117) The CAMHS assessors may make a family tree, which will help them to understand if there are any family problems that may be causing you distress (such as divorce). They may also ask you about your childhood, which will help them to see if the issues you are facing have been present for a long time. What happens at the end of the assessment? At the end of the assessment, the CAMHS team will talk to you about whether their services will suit you and what treatment they think you might need. They will ask for your feelings about the assessment, and there will be time for you to ask questions (117). Once the young person has chosen to seek professional help If the young person you are supporting is nervous about taking the first step, you can offer some support, if appropriate. You can: – Guide them through how to register at a GP’s surgery, which includes finding their local surgery on the NHS website and completing a registration form. It may possibly involve showing proof of identity and/or address. If the young person is under 16, they can still register without an adult, but may be asked some questions to make sure that they are okay (106). – Guide them through how to book a GP appointment.
