There are situations when it is not appropriate to contact parent(s)/carer(s). If you are supporting a pre-adolescent and they reveal that they are experiencing abuse, neglect, or exploitation at home, then contacting the parent(s)/carer(s) may further endanger them. If this happens, call the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children’s (NSPCC) 24-hour helpline on 0808 800 5000. The NSPCC can offer advice and guidance, and take your concerns to the appropriate channels on your behalf. Your call can be anonymous. If you work for an employer with a child protection policy, follow the guidelines immediately. If you believe the young person is in immediate danger, call the police on 999. Before you approach the contact in your setting, ask the pre- adolescent whether they would like to explain how they are feeling, or if they would like you to speak on their behalf. It might be tiring or frustrating for the pre-adolescent to have to repeat themselves to another adult. Tell the pre-adolescent what you intend to share – make sure it is accurate and that they are comfortable with it. Depending on the level of risk and your professional role in the school setting, you may need to override confidentiality. After you have signposted to an internal professional, it might feel appropriate for you to follow up with the pre-adolescent to see
