The main symptoms of hyperactivity and impulsivity are: – Difficulty sitting still, especially in calm or quiet surroundings – Difficulty concentrating on tasks – Difficulty waiting turns – Frequent fidgeting – Excessive physical movement – Excessive talking – Acting without thinking – Interrupting conversations – A lack of awareness of danger (141) Autistic Spectrum Disorder (ASD) Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is called a ‘spectrum disorder’ because autism can range from mild to severe, with the presentation varying greatly in different people. Key characteristics of autism include challenges during social interaction and communication, rigid and repetitive behaviours, and very specific interests (142). An autistic young person will also have an abundance of unique qualities and strengths. Signs and symptoms in children and young people include challenges engaging with communication, challenges when recognising and understanding the feelings of others, and behaviour and activities outside of the societal ‘norms’. These traits can make it difficult to develop and sustain relationships, and to understand the social world around them.
