In severe depression, a young person will often describe being emotionally blunted and “beyond tears.” There may be a lack of attention to physical appearance and personal hygiene. Whilst some young people with depression will often be slow in moving and thinking, they may become agitated from time to time. Signs at home Although many of the following signs could be considered ‘normal’ adolescent behaviour, a young person experiencing depression may show the following signs at home: – Withdrawing from family and spending a lot of time in their bedroom – Complaining of tiredness even if they are sleeping more than usual or experiencing insomnia – Having difficulty doing household chores, either forgetting to do them or not doing them completely – Avoiding discussing important future events, such as decisions about education – Behaving in an aggressive or antisocial way
