Digital Version Youth MHFA manual Large Print

Treatment: Psychological therapy , CBT , group CBT, family therapy, or guided self-help (for mild to moderate depression after four weeks of observation, and for moderate to severe depression for a duration of at least three months) (185). Children and young people who are experiencing little to no progress should be offered more frequent treatment over a longer duration. Antidepressant medication should not be offered except in combination with therapy, careful monitoring of drug reactions, and monitoring of general progress. Other supports: Very often a young person with depression may not be aware of their progress in the early stages of recovery. Family and friends can help by highlighting signs of improvement to the young person, and by encouraging self-help strategies.
