Signs at school A young person experiencing anxiety may show the following signs at school: – Being extremely cautious and quiet, appearing fearful of asking questions – Asking for extra time from teachers, asking many questions, or requiring a lot of reassurance – Regularly unable to hand in work on time, due to either procrastination or perfectionism – Complaining of sudden physical illness such as stomach aches and headaches, especially when exams or presentations are scheduled – Constantly asking if things are all right or similar questions – Irritable and demanding behaviours (it often takes a great deal of patience to see the anxiety behind this) (188) In many pre-adolescents the signs of anxiety may be different, they may exhibit the following: – Extremely shy, timid, and clingy behaviour – Real challenges when mixing with other children – Difficulty falling asleep and staying asleep – Repeated nightmares (more than one a week) – Repeated complaints of headaches or tummy aches
