Agoraphobia involves avoidance of situations because of a fear of being outside of their home, or in enclosed and/or open spaces. Agoraphobia can include fears of being trapped or helpless (193). Social anxiety disorder is the fear of any situation in which public scrutiny or embarrassment may be possible. The key fear is that others will think badly of the person (194). Social anxiety disorder often develops in shy children as they move into adolescence. A young person experiencing social anxiety disorder would typically avoid after school/work events, or even attending school or work entirely. Separation anxiety disorder Whilst some young people are afraid of being in a certain situation or near a specific object, some young people fear being away from their loved one(s). A young person with separation anxiety disorder shows excessive anxiety about being separated from a parent/ In many pre-adolescents the signs of anxiety may be different, they may exhibit the following: – Not have flashbacks or problems remembering trauma the way adults often do – Put the events of the trauma in the wrong order – Think there were signs that the trauma was going to happen and look out for them again – Show signs in their play by repeating a part of the trauma (192)
