Addictive behaviours and substance misuse cont.

Signs Harmful gaming or gambling Gaming and gambling behaviours have recognisable similarities so many of the signs and outcomes can be the same. Physical effects can include poor general health, eye strain, drastic changes in vision, poor posture, headaches, migraines, and lack of physical exercise. They may also include repetitive strain injury (RSI) and signs of stiffness, aches, pain and numbness in the hands or thumbs due to gaming for extended periods on gaming consoles. Psychological effects can include a reduced interest in usual hobbies (which are replaced by a preoccupation with gambling or gaming), feeling vulnerable or ashamed of letting people down, appearing suddenly agitated or upset, anger or rage when a gaming or gambling session is interrupted, and feeling isolated from interactions and relationships taking place in a physical space. Behavioural effects can include displaying a compulsion or urgency to get back to their gaming or gambling and checking phone repeatedly to check results of a bet or game (238, 239, 240). Signs at home A young person experiencing gambling or gaming harm may show the following signs at home: – Spending less time with friends or avoiding family events so they can gamble or game – Lying about how they’re spending their time and money – Borrowing or stealing money – Being up late at night on gambling or gaming platforms, having reduced or no sleep, or changed sleeping patterns
