– Having reduced nutrition or self-care, for example, skipping meals, relying on junk food, resisting toilet breaks, or having poor hygiene (238, 239, 240) Signs at school A young person experiencing gambling or gaming harm may show the following signs at school: – Displaying boredom in lessons – Difficulty concentrating in class or during homework – Low motivation to complete homework, or skipping it entirely to play games or gamble (238, 239, 240) Substance misuse Physical effects can include cravings and feelings of withdrawal, neglect of physical health, and anxiety. Psychological effects can include finding it physically and mentally difficult to control use of a substance despite wanting to, and feeling out of control, scared, or lost. Behavioural effects can include taking a substance in larger amounts or for a longer period than intended, using the substance at times or in amounts where it impacts a person’s ability to fulfil their work, school, or home responsibilities, neglect of previous interests whilst spending a lot of time obtaining, using, or recovering from the substance, and continuing use despite clear evidence of harmful effects (241).
