Signs at home A young person experiencing substance misuse may show the following signs at home: – Becoming increasingly secretive or avoiding answering parent or carer’s questions, particularly when it comes to where they go and what they do with friends – Taking alcohol from where it is stored in the house – Appearing to suffer from a hangover some mornings, difficulty waking or getting up, or vomiting – Eating a lot of snack food when they get home at night as a result of increased appetite from substance use – Spending money more quickly than they used to, or being unable to explain what they are spending their money on – Unusual equipment left around the home, such as burnt foil or torn cigarette packets (242) Signs at school A young person experiencing substance misuse may show the following signs at school: – A decline in school grades – Difficulty maintaining focus and concentration – Decreasing the time spent on healthy extracurricular activities such as sport (242).
