Addictive behaviours and substance misuse cont.
Be aware of the young person’s recall of events. When discussing their substance use, bear in mind that they may struggle to recall events that occurred if they were under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Don’t pressure a young person to recall events that may be traumatic or difficult to remember. Help the young person to explore reasons for harmful behaviours. It may be useful to encourage the young person to reflect on the reasons behind them experiencing harmful gaming, gambling, or substance use before sharing information. Try to have an open- ended conversation that allows them to explore the issues at hand at their own pace (260). Show you have knowledge about their experience. Share the dangers of addictive behaviours, whilst remaining non- judgemental. If a young person is engaging in gaming, don’t assume that all their habits are causing harm or are the cause of any developing poor mental health (it is more likely a symptom). Recognise that it is a social activity they can enjoy with their friends, and that it is important to them (262). Share and help make a list of helpful strategies. Whether or not the young person wants to completely change their habits, you can help them to reduce any negative impact. Share the following strategies and help the young person note down any they would like to try: – Identify and use other ways to handle gambling and substance use urges – professionals can support with harm-minimisation techniques. – Balance time spent on gaming, gambling, and substance use with other activities and take regular breaks from habits.
