Gaming and gambling specific strategies include: – Find games that reflect the young person’s ethnicity, nationality, gender, or sexuality. – Find games with safe and age-appropriate content. – Find games to play with friends or family in a safe environment with time limitations. – Arrange to have access to a limited amount of money each day that covers daily expenses only and allocate a small amount of money for gaming investments. – Don’t use borrowed money, personal investments, or savings to make gaming purchases or gamble (262). – Learn about the strategies that gaming or gambling providers use to keep people engaging and maximise use or profits, e.g., gambling machines are designed to keep people playing and spending money. – Avoid going to physical gambling venues and block online sites, even if the young person is not planning on gambling. – Avoid spending time with people who are associated with gambling activities. – Stick to screen-time agreements (260). – Don’t gamble when alcohol or other drugs are involved, or if the young person is experiencing upset emotions. There are parental controls available on many popular gaming consoles. What is important is that any set limits are agreed between the young person and adult. This will encourage the young person’s adherence.
