Substance misuse specific strategies include: – A young person exploring their own boundaries and limitations, such as knowing the alcohol content of drinks, keeping track of the number of drinks consumed, drinking beverages with lower alcohol content, and switching to non-alcoholic drinks when starting to feel the effects (263). – Eating and drinking plenty of water while drinking alcohol. Other supports: Family and friends can help to encourage more healthy habits and home environments. They can follow advice on providing an alcohol-free or adult-guided environment (261). NICE guidelines recommend that families and carers should also be consulted about their concerns and the impact any alcohol or drug use has on themselves and other family members, such as other young people. Treatment: CBT and harm-minimisation techniques delivered by a mental health professional such as a psychologist. There are some local offers via CAMHS for harmful gaming and gambling in young people, although these are not nation-wide. These services tend to focus on comorbidity, such as harmful behaviours with depression or anxiety. National gambling support service, GamCare , offer support for young people who are experiencing gambling or gaming harm. GamCare also offer support to parent(s)/carer(s) and other family members who are impacted by a young person’s gambling or gaming behaviour.
