If the young person is reluctant to seek help because they don’t want to stop their habits completely, explain that the treatment goal may be to reduce consumption rather than to quit altogether. Support a young person through relapse. Be aware that the young person may have tried and failed repeatedly to control addictive behaviours. They may even have received help from a professional service in the past. Offer support and let the young person know that relapse is not a sign of failure. Explain that harmful behaviours take time to develop and therefore can take time to change (267). Safeguarding pre-adolescents If you have concerns about a pre-adolescent or older vulnerable young person who is engaging in risky and harmful behaviours, call the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children’s (NSPCC) 24-hour helpline on 0808 800 5000. The NSPCC can offer advice and guidance, and take your concerns to the appropriate channels on your behalf. Your call can be anonymous. If you work for an employer with a child protection policy, follow the guidelines immediately. If you believe the young person is in immediate danger, call the police on 999.
