Treatment and other supports: If a person has physical alcohol withdrawal symptoms (like shaking, sweating, or feeling anxious until they have the first drink of the day), they should take medical advice before stopping completely. It can be dangerous to stop too quickly without proper advice and support. A young person should be signposted to their GP, parent/carer, and any appropriate school professional. Depending on the nature of the injury, medical attention may be needed to avoid risk of infection or serious physical health complications. Always follow physical first aid guidelines and seek medical advice. If the young person is unconscious: 1. Make sure that the young person’s airway is clear and roll them on to their side and into the recovery position . Clear any vomit from the mouth with two fingers. Tilt the head back gently and slightly down. 2. Phone 999 for an ambulance. State that the young person is unconscious and why. 3. Try to find out what substances have been used, if any, and tell medical staff. Stay out of kicking and hitting distance. When someone is affected by substances, they might not be fully unconscious, and may lash out unintentionally. Keep yourself safe and let them know what you’re doing at all times. Clear away any hazards. This could be broken glass or other dangerous objects.
