Healthy development and how to promote it Although genes play a role in the decline of synapses, research has shown that childhood also contributes to this process. Synapses can be strengthened, and engaging in healthy behaviours and brain optimal stimulation can help ensure healthy prefrontal cortex development. These might include: – Learning Participating in new activities and stimulating the brain intellectually can help generate neural connections and strengthen positive neural pathways which means information is consolidated. Furthermore, learning can help protect against memory loss (18). – Dietary intake Young people need lots of energy and nutrients because they’re still growing. Eating a healthy balanced diet is important and it should include at least five portions of fruit and vegetables per day, alongside starchy foods and protein rich foods (19). – Exercise The psychological benefits of exercise are significant, including improved blood flow, optimised neurotransmitters, and the growth of new brain cells. The UK government recommends varied exercise of sixty minutes per day (20). – Mindfulness Research has shown positive outcomes from mindfulness across several health conditions commonly encountered during adolescence as well as chronic pain and sleep problems (21). – Sleep Different people need different amounts of sleep. Adolescents have a different body clock and commonly find it difficult to
