Adolescence is the unique and formative period when a young person’s body, brain, and social environments go through changes that prepare them for adulthood. During adolescence the brain undergoes neural change and hormonal development that influences the ability to emotionally self-regulate. It is during this time that young people are especially vulnerable to poor mental health. What do we need to know? There are many factors that can contribute to stress during adolescence. Developmental challenges for adolescents can include: – Development of cognitive skills – Experimenting with risk taking, drugs, alcohol, and sex – Challenging of authority – Challenging of moral and social structures – Understanding of sexuality and gender identity – Changing physical appearance – Taking responsibility for themselves – Finding a job or making education decisions – Developing relationships with others – Reacting to pressures to conform with peers – Dealing with disparities between lived realities and life aspirations, which can be exacerbated by media influence and gender norms (39)
