Vulnerability

Emotional stressors can include family and parental problems, peer pressure, bullying, emotional neglect or abuse, and highly expressed emotion within the family home. Acute life events can include bereavements, physical accidents, child rape, assault, physical conflict, and child pregnancy. Chronic stress can include accommodation problems, family financial issues or debt, and prolonged use of drugs/alcohol (73). The Stress Vulnerability Model The Stress Vulnerability Model was proposed by Zubin and Spring in 1977 (74). The idea behind it is that everyone, including young people, can become unwell when the stress they face becomes more than they can cope with. A young person’s ability to deal with stress – their vulnerability – varies, so issues which one young person may deal with easily might be enough to cause another young person to develop poor mental health (75).
