5. CLIMB ST ANDREW’S CHURCH TOWER At 114.5 metres, the tower of St Andrew’s Church is the highest in Lower Saxony. To get to the viewing platform at a height of 75 metres, you have to put in quite an effort: There are 364 steps between the ground and the magnifi- cent view over the city. Once you reach the top, you will see the climb is more than worth it!

7. EXPERIENCE DIVERSE CULTURE Hildesheim loves culture! Whether you visit the Theater für Niedersachsen (Theatre for Lower Saxony – TfN), listen to finest jazz and blues in the Bischofsmühle and at Jazztime, take part at a Comedy or Poetry Slam at the KUFA, visit the Marketplace Music Festival, the Hildesheimer Wallungen, M'era Luna, Pflasterzauber or the Hildesheim Christmas market – the city offers extraordinary events all year round. Experience the region Hildesheim from June to September as part of the Cultural Regionale 2025. Last but not least, we are celebrating 40 years of UNESCO World Heritage in Hildesheim! 8. IMMERSE YOURSELF IN THE SCENERY Hildesheim provides the perfect setting for combining an exciting city experience with a relaxing swim in the country- side. The River Innerste, almost 100 kilometres long, flows through the city and is ideal for canoeing or standup padd - leboarding. The Hohnsensee lake is also close to the city centre and is ideal for swimming, jogging or just relaxing. To further immerse yourself in the scenery, take a walk through the neighbouring Ernst-Ehrlicher-Park and the ram- parts or along the Kalenberger Graben. You can also explore the area by bike on various routes such as the Hi-Ring or the Innerste Bicycle Path.
1. STROLL ACROSS THE HISTORIC MARKET SQUARE
3. VISIT ST MICHAEL’S CHURCH AND THE MAGDALENA GARDENS
Here, magnificent half-timbered houses stand side by side. Each building, or facade, was faithfully reconstructed in the 1980s after being almost completely destroyed in the Second World War. Listen to the carillon of the Hildes- heim Town Hall and let your eyes wander from the car- vings and pictures on the Knochenhauer-Amtshaus (But- chers’ Guild Hall) and the Wedekindhaus to the elaborate architecture of the Tempelhaus and the beautiful facades and sections of the Van der Valk Hotel. An absolute highlight in winter during the Christmas market!
It is not without good reason that the church, over a thousand years old, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site alongside St Mary’s Cathedral: it stands as one of the most significant surviving examples of Ottonian architecture. Perched like a fortress atop St Michael’s Hill, the church’s interior exudes a unique and awe-inspiring atmosphere, not least because of its monumental 13th-century ceiling fresco. A mere stone’s throw away lies the beautiful Magda- lenengarten (Magdalena Gardens), a haven for hundreds of roses, wild tulips, and precious varieties of fruit trees.

6. STROLL THROUGH THE ENCHANTING OLD TOWN Walking through the historic half-timbered Old Town feels like being in a fairy tale, with the last remaining watchtower in the city, the Kehrwiederturm, and the colourful, someti- mes whimsical, half-timbered houses adorned with fragrant climbing roses. The charm of the half-timbered buildings is especially magical on Kesslerstraße, which forms part of the Rose Route. But there are also real eye-catchers in the sur- rounding streets, such as the richly decorated Wernersche Haus, one of the oldest preserved half-timbered houses in Hildesheim.

4. TAKE PART IN A CITY TOUR There are many different ways to explore Hildesheim. Why not join a guided tour of the city? Experienced Hildesheim experts will show you the highlights of the city and give you real insider information. If you prefer to explore the city on your own, take the Rose Route and let the more than 150 ceramic roses embedded in the ground show you the way. You can also pick up a brochure from the Tourist Information Office in the Market Square as your companion or down- load the new Hildesheim city tour in the Lauschtour app. The hiApp also has selected city tours ready for you.

2. ADMIRE THE CATHEDRAL TREASURY When visiting a cathedral city, exploring the cathedral itself is an essential part of the experience. Our St Mary’s Cathe- dral, one of the oldest episcopal churches in Germany, is lis- ted as a UNESCO World Heritage Site alongside St Michael’s Church. In addition to the legendary Thousand-year Rose, the Cathedral Museum is home to the Cathedral Treasury, one of the world’s most important collections of sacred art and also part of the Word Heritage Site.

ST MARY’S CATHEDRAL The cathedral is impressive for its sheer size – and, of course, for its unique art treasures. Take the gilded Hezilo chandelier from the Middle Ages, which is six metres in dia- meter! Or the Bernward Doors – a masterpiece of bronze casting. The Thousand-year Rose is a popular photo oppor- tunity in the courtyard framed by the cloister. In the Cathe- dral Museum, you can learn about the legend that literally surrounds this place, dating back to the founding of the diocese in 815. Among other things, the Cathedral Treasury, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, can be seen here – one of the world's most impressive collections of sacred art. ST MICHAEL’S CHURCH Its slightly elevated position, massive towers and walls give this former Benedictine monastery a fortress-like appea- rance – powerful on the outside, harmonious on the inside with a strictly symmetrical floor plan. Built between 1010 and 1022 by Bishop Bernward, the three-aisled, double- choir basilica with its Lower Saxon alternating columns and fully formed cube capitals is one of the most import- ant surviving churches in the Ottonian (pre-Romanesque) architectural style. Don't forget to look up when you're in the church – the ceiling of the central nave is adorned by a monumental panel painting from the High Middle Ages, created around 1200. The Tree of Jesse is depicted on 1,300 painted oak planks. EXPERIENCE EXHIBITION The free interactive exhibition on the upper floor of the Tourist Information Office in the historic Market Square is the perfect way to deepen your understanding of the UNESCO World Heritage in Hildesheim and the surrounding region. The exhibition is currently being redesigned and is expected to reopen in time for UNESCO World Heritage Day.
40 YEARS OF UNESCO- WORLD HERITAGE

St Michael’s Church
Currently, there are 1,223 UNESCO World Heritage Sites worldwide across 168 countries, with 54 located in Germany alone. But what exactly is UNESCO’s mission? UNESCO is dedicated to preserving and protecting the world’s rich cultural and natural heritage. It also plays a vital role in fostering global cooperation, promoting peace and ensuring security. UNESCO World Heritage Sites serve as powerful symbols of this mission, connecting people by showcasing diversity, global solidarity and our shared re - sponsibility. These extraordinary places tell the story of hu - manity’s lives and labours, offering fascinating insights into the development of our planet. One heritage – two churches: In 1985, exactly 40 years ago, St Mary’s Cathedral and St Michael’s Church at Hildesheim were jointly added to the UNESCO World Heritage List. Together with their artistic treasures, these two churches are remarkable examples of religious art in the Holy Roman Empire and outstanding achievements of early Romanesque architecture.

The Hildesheim churches of St Michael’s and St Mary’s Cathedral, including their art treasures, were added to the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites as early as 1985. In 2025, we celebrate the 40th anniversary of being awarded World Heritage status. The legendary Thousand-year Rose grows in the apse of the cathedral, a reminder of its turbu- lent history dating back to the 9th century. The Cathedral Museum is home to the Cathedral Treasury, which is part of the UNESCO World Heritage. The ensemble provides an overview of the furnishings of Romanesque church interiors and medieval art that is unique in the world in terms of its scope and quality. The Cathedral Museum has preserved many artefacts containing works of art, materials or techniques from more distant regions. In particular, the Islamic regions of the sout- hern and eastern Mediterranean were highly regarded in Europe. A new multilingual tour invites visitors to discover the cultural links through the historical artefacts.
EXPERIENCE CULTURE LIVE When stories are brought to life, the magic of the stage is inescapable. Whether it’s timeless works, imaginative cha- racters or topical themes – art entertains, moves and brings people together. The Theater fü r Niedersachsen (Theatre for Lower Saxony – TfN) presents a wide range of cultural events at the Hil- desheim City Theatre and other venues: classical operas, humorous operettas, plays from traditional to modern, musicals from Broadway to chanson, social events and concerts with orchestras and choirs. There is also plenty on offer for children and young people. As a state theatre, the TfN also offers performances in around 40 towns and communities in Lower Saxony and the neighbouring federal states. The Musical Company, which was established in 2007 and makes the musical genre a separate section of the TfN, is unique in Germany. The complete programme can be found on the TfN website at www.mein-theater.live. Tickets are available online, by phone at 05121 16931693 and at the service centre in Theaterstraße 6.

OUT OF THE RUT, INTO THE BISCHOFSMÜHLE! Bischofsmü hle Cyclus 66 e.V. is a non-profit cultural association recognised as worthy of support and based in the Bischofsmü hle Hildesheim. The building is located on the Innerste in the heart of the city and offers a unique atmosphere in the basement of a former water mill. This is why the “Mü hle” is often referred to as “the chicest club between Moscow and New York”. In addition to the year- round cultural activities at the Bischofsmü hle, the associa- tion has been organising Jazztime Hildesheim since 1979. Over the years, the three-day jazz festival, which always takes place at Whitsun, has become as much a cultural trade- mark of the city of Hildesheim as the Bischofsmü hle itself.

3. FOLLOW THE ROSE ROUTE The Rose Route starts at the historic Market Square, which was almost completely destroyed by bombing raids shortly before the end of the Second World War. In 1989, the city began to rebuild the historic facades. They are still a very popular photo subject. The most notable buildings include the Knochenhauer-Amtshaus (Butcher’s Guild Hall), with its many carved and painted artworks, the Tempel- haus with its striking towers, the Wedekindhaus and the Lüntzelhaus. They have all been restored to their original beauty.
Now just follow the ceramic roses embedded in the ground and let them guide you through the city. They will automatically lead you past the most important sights. The basic tour takes about two hours andcan be extended as you like with three add-ons. You can also pick up a brochure with brief informa- tion about the individual stops at the Tourist Information Office in the Market Square.
MY TIPS FOR HILDESHEIM
Street Art in the Nordstadt
1. CLIMB THE HIGHEST CHURCH TOWER IN LOWER SAXONY
Why did I never have Hildesheim on my radar as a travel destination? After all, it is home to one of the most beautiful market squares in Germany! And there’s so much more to discover. The city captivates visitors with its beau tiful half-timbered facades, exciting museums, creative street art and plenty of culinary delights. Here are my tips for your time in Hildesheim.
At 114.5 metres, the tower of St Andrew’s Church in Hildesheim is the highest church tower in Lower Saxony. What makes it special is that you can climb it. The way to the top leads up 364 steps, past the belfry and the old mechanical clockwork. From the viewing platform at a height of 75 metres, you can enjoy an impressive panoramic view over the city’s rooftops and far beyond the region. All the sights, such as St Mary’s Cathedral and St Michael’s Church, are at your feet from up here. Information boards provide helpful orientation. 2. STROLL THROUGH THE HALF-TIMBERED DISTRICT The Kehrwiederturm, the last remaining watchtower of the former city fortifications, takes you to Hildesheim’s half-tim- bered district. Around the Basilica of St Godehard, with its beautiful garden, there are quaint cobbled alleys lined with gorgeous half-timbered houses. Hinterer Brühl is probably the most beautiful alley in Hildesheim. Here you can admire crooked facades, colourful carvings and inscriptions, and immerse yourself in centuries past. A walk along this alley will give you a sense of how beautiful the city must have been before the Second World War. Many of the destroyed buildings have been completely restored. The three-storey, listed Wernersche Haus is a true gem. Dating back to 1606, this building is decorated with 29 carved panels. The Waffenschmiedehaus (Armourer's House) from 1548 in the street Gelber Stern is the oldest half-timbered house in Hildesheim. And Keßlerstraße is a street you shouldn’t miss either.
Timber-framed quarter, Basilika St. Godehard
4. ADMIRE STREET ART IN THE NORDSTADT A real insider tip for Hildesheim is a self-guided street art tour through the Nordstadt, the northern part of the city. The start and finish is at the main train station. On foot, you will pass small and large street art works of the Nordstadt wall gallery. They are mainly found on house facades, but also on electricity boxes and walls. With the help of the free
hiApp, you can navigate to the individual works of art. Here you will also find exciting background information about the artists and their works. I particularly liked the piece by Xema Gonzales. It’s called “Values” and shows a young girl against a green background, drinking the knowledge of the world through a straw. It represents the thirst for knowledge, creati- vity, culture and wisdom. 5. TAKE PART IN A COFFEE WORKSHOP At the Dreielf coffee roastery, high-quality coffee is roasted in a traditional drum roaster. True to their motto, “Make your home brewtiful”, the workshop of the
coffee roasters in Hildesheim’s Ostend district will show you how to brew and prepare really good coffee at home. It doesn’t matter if you’re a beginner or a real coffee nerd. You will also learn how to make the pefect froth and how to roast coffee.

and finesse, can also be enjoyed on the spot in the adjacent coffee bar. Kaffee Rösterei Schuler on Osterstraße offers a rotating selection of freshly hand-roasted coffees ranging from strong and spicy to chocolatey, fruity and mild. Roasting usually takes place on Fridays. Spectators are welcome! If you want to delve deeper into the subject, you can attend one of the regular coffee seminars. A little further out, in the new Ostend district, is DREIELF Rösthandwerk . The DREIELF team also brings coffee to life with workshops, events and classic catering. You should definitely try the beer from the local brewery, Hildesheimer Braumanufaktur . Brewing is done in the brew - house, the historic waterworks at Goslarsche Landstraße 15. On Thursdays and Fridays, you can enjoy all the drinks on the premises, either in the spacious, idyllic beer garden if the we- ather is nice or by the cosy fireplace during the cold season. The brewery regularly attracts visitors with special events, brewery seminars, tours and beer tastings. Can’t make it to the brewery? No problem! You can also get selected beers at the Tourist Information Office in the his - toric Market Square. Here you will find many other regional and seasonal specialties, such as Hildesheim's exclusive rum – the Hildesheimer Rumtreiber – various Hildesheim rose products, such as rose syrup, rose salt and rose sugar, as well as delicious fruit spreads from “Ediths feine Hexenküche” (Edith’s Fine Witch’s Kitchen). Come and have a look!
SHOPPING Convenient locations, a relaxed atmosphere and a fine, select range of products: three good reasons that make Hildesheim such an attractive place to shop. Here, owner-managed businesses, traditional shops, small boutiques, second-hand shops and innovative concept stores all showcase their goods. Everything is within easy walking distance. Almsstraße

The Hildes- heim Gift Voucher can be purchased at the Tourist Information Office in Hildesheim and at www .hildesheim-gutschein.de.
SHOPPING IN THE CITY CENTRE You can start your shopping trip at the Huckup monument – the distinctive goblin from a Hildesheim legend – at the beginning of the lively shopping street Hoher Weg. The pedestrian area stretches for about one kilometre to the main train station. Here you will find numerous retailers and modern department stores, as well as a wide range of restaurants. At the southern end of Hoher Weg lies Schuh- straße, home to more shops and the central bus stops. At this hub, you can easily transfer between most bus lines. Scheelenstraße and Osterstraße are among Hildesheim's oldest shopping streets. Here you will find a variety of ow- ner-managed specialist shops, small studios, boutiques, wine merchants and cafés. If the weather is bad, you can shop indoors at the Ostertorpassage, the Andreas-Passage and the Arneken Galerie. DISCOVER HILDESHEIM’S CULINARY DELIGHTS A shopping trip is even more enjoyable when you can pick up a little gift for yourself or a loved one. Hildesheim offers you a range of culinary inspirations – from sweet and sugary to hoppy and dry. Handelshaus Schlegel is a real institution in Hildesheim. Since 1955, this traditional Hildesheim shop has been offe- ring premium spirits and wines, as well as the finest confec- tionery. At Schlegel’s, you can also buy the original Heavenly Hildesheim Truffles – handmade sugar and cream temptati- ons with a creamy cocoa filling. Simply delicious!

4. NORDSTADT Hildesheim’s Nordstadt district is characterised by its cultural diversity and its imaginative, constantly growing street art scene. Take a stroll through the streets and keep an eye out for the colourful works of art. You can find more works of art in the studios and galleries of the Nordstadt district. Kathrin Sättele has made the Nordstadt her home and place of work. It is here that she passionately forges delica- te and exciting pieces of jewellery that are reminiscent of sweeping calligraphy. Monika Borchardt’s studio is a little off the beaten track at Hildesheim Airport, with a fantastic view over the airfield. The changing exhibitions feature paintings and jewellery. NOTE Please note that the studios and galleries are not always open. Check the websites of the individual artists for opening hours or personal appointments.

If you are now curious, immerse yourself in the world of arts and crafts & design. On three individual city tours in the hiApp through the different districts of Hildesheim, you will not only discover beautiful places off the beaten track, but perhaps also one or two special souvenirs.

1. NEUSTADT (TOUR IN THE HIAPP) Half-timbered houses, green spaces, churches – studios and galleries. All this awaits you on a trip to Hildesheim’s Neustadt. Several artists have fallen in love with this district and settled there. Take a stroll through the charming streets and get an impression of their craftsmanship.
In her ceramic workshop, Stephanie Link produces bowls, mugs and vases for everyday use – in a sustainable way, because beautiful, high-quality ceramics do not wear out and are timeless. 2. MORITZBERG (TOUR IN THE HIAPP) The beautiful Moritzberg district is a little off the beaten track. Here you will find individual, lovingly run cafes, restaurants and shops. The old architecture and beautiful natural surroundings invite you to linger. Don’t miss the breathtaking view of Hildesheim from the top of Mittelallee. This cosy neighbourhood is also home to Galerie Reizig , where selected artists showcase their interpretations of nature’s beauty, captured and embodied in exquisite pieces of jewellery. This is how valuable keepsakes are created. 3. OSTSTADT (TOUR IN THE HIAPP) This quiet district is home to numerous historic buildings, the “Steingrube” municipal park and the Theater für Nieder- sachsen. At the beginning and the end of the tour, small studios and galleries are worth a stopover. In her studio, Marit Bindernagel has created a place where jewellery and tableware take centre stage. With delicate hammer blows, she creates light and supple products in gold and silver. The showroom and workshop are combined in a quiet backyard.

AT THE CHRISTMAS MARKET To round out the evening, we invite you to our beautiful Christmas market. From 25 November to 28 December, the Market Square, Platz An der Lilie and the pedestrian area become a haven for people to enjoy the last hours of the day in a delightful atmosphere. It’s the perfect way to get into the Christmas spirit during the festive season. Traditional wooden huts, with the design of their facades drawing on the half-tim- bered style of old Hildesheim buildings, ensure a cosy atmo- sphere. The Christmas tree, standing more than ten metres tall, is always an astonishing sight, not least because it is decked with more than 7,500 LED lights. The great Christmas pyramid, small fairground rides and the romantic Ferris wheel provide entertainment for visitors young and old. Fascinating handicrafts and regional delicacies such as Hildesheim Cathe- dral Stollen, Hildesheim Truffles and Hildesheim Rosentaler make it a very special experience.

ADVENT MUSIC IN THE CHURCHES Hildesheim is a city with more than 30 churches, so you shouldn’t forget about them amongst the magic of Christmas in Hildesheim. These churches shape the cityscape, and are a testament to the city’s rich history. In the Christmas period, there are various free events such as the annual “Advent music by candlelight” concert at the UNESCO World Heritage St Michael’s Church or the Advent Concert at St Andrew’s Church. They provide a tranquil retreat full of music for ever- yone during this sometimes hectic period. A short trip to the magical cathedral city in the lead-up to Christmas is always well worth it. There is so much to discover and so many opportunities to be enchanted.
THROUGH FESTIVE HILDESHEIM A public Christmas tour around the festive cathedral city gives you a closer look at the historic cityscape. The tour starts at 5 pm every Friday and Saturday on the Advent weekends and includes a warming Glühwein (mulled wine) or punch per person. The route takes you along the be- autifully lit streets around the historic Market Square, accompanied by the delicious fragrances of various Leb- kuchen, roasted almonds and Schmalzkuchen (bite-sized doughnuts).
